Question Removing skin and hair from a deer skull?

For a year now my dad has had this nice 8pt rack sitting around, but can't seem to get the skin and hair off the skull at the base of the antlers. Anyone know any things about removing it to leave a clean skull??

Maybe try a tannery trick of boiling the skull but it bleaches the antlers I've heard

submerge skull in strong solution of bleach for a week and it should loosen skin and fur up.rinse good and rub oil on antlers to bring color back.

Salt will also loosen up the skin and hair.

My father in law boils them to get the hair and skin off.

I use to bury mine in dirt for several months and let nature take it's course. Walt just did the same with his bear head

My bro is a taxidermist. It is really pretty simple
He soaks his in wateruntil the meat falls off.

Then he uses a paste to make the skull white.

Give me a shout and I can fill you in on the details. 856-297-1082

We've done it a million times. Cut as much off as you can and then boil. Cut off as much as you can and boil again. It will come off. Check out our toughest job. A deer we found that was dead for a few months. That was a tough job GAG

Boil it, but do it OUTSIDE! It's really not a smell you want in your house. An exacto knife can be helpful to get the tough parts of the hide below the knurled base of the antlers. You can boil it too much, and then there will not be enough tissue between the skull plates and they will fall apart when it dries. Just boil for a while, pull off what you can and then stick it back in the water to soften up some more. When your done and its dry, find a beauty supply shop, they carry 40% peroxide, which is great for bleaching the skull. Just brush it on and let it dry in the sun, then repeat until it is as white as you want it.

Thanks guys, gotta let my dad know to soak it for a while, then boil it. We are gonna cover over the little bit of skull with felt so it doesn't have to be white as can be.

If you have a trophy quality mount and want to have it look awesome, I've used Beetle Works in South Philly. Deer are about $90 .They have a little basement workshop with meat eating beetles and do a lot of work for museums. The skull comes back clean as a whistle. Hmmmm meat eating beetles in S. Philly- sounds like a cover op for getting rid of bodies
