Its a research buoy. Weather etc. It has been out there for along time. I believe they did take it out for awhile to do maintenance . I have it marked in my gps .I use it as a reference point sometimes
The weather station is on my Navionics chip and shows up on my chart. It's located close to the 3 mile line off Convention Hall. I believe it collects weather and wave height data for the National Weather Service.
It's a University of Maryland CINAR Storm data buoy. Per USCG LNM. it's to be pulled 12/1 on or about, weather permitting. It is not part of the NOAA weather system (and everyone is wondering why not including NOAA, Dan Skelton from AC Press weather) The official weather buoy was lost during Storm Jonas.
NJ – SEACOAST – LITTLE EGG INLET TO HEREFORD INLET – OFF SHORE LITTLE EGG INLET - CINAR STORM BUOY
On or about 2 Aug through 1 Dec 2016 the University of Maryland, Center for Environmental Science will be deploying a CINAR Tempests Stormmonitoring buoy in approximate position 39° 28' 7.2” N, 74° 13' 52.2” W. The buoy is yellow in color and shows a W FL 4S light at night withapproximately 7 ft of the buoy showing above the water line.
