Took a good client, Craig, and my buddy, Al, out for a day aboard my "Bertha" on Thursday, 5/31/07.
Started clamming the outgoing tide at Romer Shoal in the morning where bites were few and far between despite heavy chumming.
Craig caught & released 2 small 7-8 pound bass, and I landed a pair of similar-sized dinks along with the only decent fish which was 33"/15 pounds.
With little to no action on the shoal, we took a ride down the beach to check out the clam beds. After arrival, we set up briefly in wind against tide conditions, but we didn't stay long. Saw The "Sea Fox" pick a couple of fish from near the only commercial clammer working the area. However, most people seemed to be sitting idle in wind against tide conditions, or they were busy bringing in skates & bluefish.
We decided to pull the plug on the bass, and we headed into the bay to try some fluking. Found tons of shorts and sea robins along the coast guard ledge. They were hitting almost as soon as we would get our squid/spearing baits to the bottom
Eventually, I picked up the first keeper of the day at 17.75", and Craig followed shortly afterwards with a nice 3 pounder that was ~20-21".
Nice West wind in the morning, but it quickly switched to SE by midday. Water temps from 57-64 degrees with a few shallow areas in the bay approaching 70 degrees.
Nice day on the water, but the bright sun, clear water and high temps certainly didn't help us out with our bassin' attempt. Fortunately, we were able to bail out with the fluke, and Craig left the day with enough fillets for a decent family meal.
