View Full Version : Mugging off of IBSP w/pics

Captain Ken W
06-03-2007, 05:10 PM
Intentionally left yesterday open due to the fact that my nephew was visiting from South Carolina, so my all star crew consisted of myself, mates Ed and Tom, Capt Mike of the Renegade, Capt Bill and my nephew Terry.

Left the inlet around 5:00am and headed south along the beach, stopped a few times under some decent marks but only managed to catch blue fish. Ran a little further and found some more nice marks and found bass chasing bunker on the top of the water, however the bunker were spread out and we could not get any to live line with, we did get one nice fish jigging. Ran a little further and found a small school and managed to snag a few for the live well before a thousand other boats surrounded us and drove them down. Went back to our original spot and proceeded to absolutely mug the bass until we ran out of swimmers.

By this time the entire Manasquan and Barnegat fleet were surrounding a decant size school of bunker, we snuck out in front of the school and waited for then to come to us, when we had some live ones in the well we went back to the spot and beat them up some more.

My nephew had an absolute blast, best day of fishing in his life. Usually he comes to visit later in the summer and we go fluke fishing, he said this makes up for all the short fluke he had to throw back. He can’t wait to go home and show his friends the pictures, they fish for crappie on a near by lake and he said our bait is bigger then the fish he catches back home.

Thanks again to my crew, I may be mistaken, but I think they had a good time as well!

I still have a few open dates in June and spots to fill on a few make up charters, if you’re interested, drop me an email jpcharter@comcast.net (jpcharter@comcast.net)

Hey Capt. Ken I thought I saw you out there. We snaged a few bunker but never used them as we had too much fun trolling strech's. Great job on putting a smile on your nephew.

not for nothing, but thats just over kill, every body tries to justify killing big bass. but people that try to protect the fishery know thats really not a good thing. congradulations on your fish though. maybee you can understand where im coming from.

I am sure that Capt. Ken works hard for his charter customers, and it is his and their decision to keep them or let them swim. Personally I would rather see them swim away, however that is a business and personal decision that I make with my customers each trip out, and Capt. Ken should be granted the same abillity to make that decision. I have released well over 100 very large bass so far this year and filleted up less than 10 fish, those fish being some of the smaller fish or ones that were not gonna make it after a hard fight or a miscaught deep circle hook. Capt. Ken should be applauded for putting his fares on the meat, not chastised for what his paying customers decided to do with the meat.

You eat the fillets or you give them to internet whinners who cant catch their own. The NJ keeper time is down to about 1 month of the year anymore. a kid catches a trophy and he gets jumped on, some of you guys are sad, why not just keep the post to congrats already.

It was an interesting day out there Sat. We were with the fleet as well. The ride south at the end of the day wasn't exactly pleasurable. Had a great time, but lost the fish of a lifetime... I still can't talk about it... It keeps running thru my head like a bad dream.

Congrats on the catch captain.

FYI, There were 6 guys on the boat, the 11 fish were not even the limit. 4 un-used bonus tags I might add since we only keep what is going to be eaten quickly.

All said, our per man carbon footprint is about 10 times less than a 2 man crew running a 20 ft. CC and keeping 3 fish. (See, I can make un-founded assumptions too :p .

One thing I have noticed about stripers is that the smaller they are, the better they taste. I would much rather fillet and eat a 30 inch bass over a 40 inch bass any day of the week based on taste and texture alone. I explain that to my customers and most are obliging and keep a smaller fish or two. I take a didigital pic of some of the larger bass , and then enjoy them going off to get even bigger. I always said a picture is worth a couple thousand fry. :)

If that was directed at me, I didn't take offense.:D I in no way chastised Capt. Ken for his keeping of the fish, in fact I supported his right to do so. I offered another view that differs from the views of some, and that is what this site is all about. I have, will, and always will leave the decision on what to keep to my customers or guests aboard my boat. I won't however allow the decision to be made without the customer or guest being aware of the impact both keeping or killing has on the fishery. I choose to release most of the stripers that I catch, and I find that most of the people who fish with me choose to do the same. It is a personal choice and is in no way a decision that I would expect everyone to make. An eco-nazi I am not . :)

As for kelp sticks....unless they are an ingredient in beer, they won't be going in my stomach.

Thats whats wrong with these sites!!!!!! Everytime someone makes a post speaking their mind its met with negativity. Let people have an opinion before u start name calling. Thats what runs good people and good fishermen off this site. I've seen it a ton! If Mirrobass is a "Fish Hugger" hes prob a much better fisherman than yourself and acctually cares about the livelyhood of the striped bass fishery. RC u r prob a weekend warrior who spends all day runnin your boat thru bunker schools n catches spawnin bass wit a snag rig. Take home only what u can eat fresh and snapshot and realease the rest is the way to go! Filling your freezer, gaffin anything that swims and feeding the whole neighborhood is not. :D Still just my opinion. ;)

I have to agree with you both and did not think Mirro came across with any kind of elitest attitude.......RC on the other hand, relax bro.

You come off sounding like you are the only one aloud to have an opinion.

I must admit my stomach does turn abit when I hear Striped Bass referred to as meat. No wonder the cavemen sit-coms are starting to pop up on prime time television......:D Just in case...thats called a joke:)

#1) These "opinions" were on anothers guys thread just showing his legal fish, why not post them the day before or the week before? I just hate seeing a member get harrased for legal fish. So why not start your own positive CR thread instead of singling someout out as the problem and raining on his parade, BRO.

2) the fishery is alive and strong, but you guys fishing for less then a year dont know this yet. They have scientists who set the limits, why not let them do their job, have they been recruiting you guys for jobs, they must be.

3) "fishhugger" was coined by the moderator here.

4) You are assuming you release a fish its going to live or not be caught next week or next month.

5) you guys havent caught a fish over 20lbs yet so you cant even know what you would do if you caught a good one.

if you really want to help the endangered species of striped bass, STOP FISHING, they say 10% released fish die anyway so if you guys stop fishing one or two might survive to fall.

Wow, I never though my post about having a great day would start such a heated debate. At first I was thinking about kicking the hornets nest and posting that after I took the pictures I threw the fish in the dumpster because I don’t like striper, but them I thought some of you might take me seriously.

Thank you to those who offered their congratulations and thanks to those who defended me.

Keep in mind a few things:

We took less then our legal limit, even though we had four bonus tags on the boat, we could have easily kept five more.

We are a charter operation, we find fish, hook them, get them to the boat, clean and bag them for our customers. On a rare occasion a client will offer us a steak or fillet to take home to our families.

So if you need to know where the fish went, chances are I won’t see an other fresh fillet till fall, so yes some got vacuum packed and into my freezer and some got consumed right away.

3717

Also, I have a big family, eleven on my Mom’s side and nine on my dad’s. Most if not all of my uncles fished and most, including my dad are no longer with us. So yesterday a cooler went to my mom’s house and the call went out to my aunts, who all live in a five mile radius. I had a particular good visit with my Aunt Mary who will turn 90 on July -3, we talked about my dad’s and uncles love for fishing over a couple of beers. It made me feel great.

So if you are looking for an apology form me and my crew for taking home some fish, no matter if they were 10lbs or 110lbs, you’re not going to get it.

Oh…one more thing, just out of curiosity, how many of you guys who think we did something wrong are members of the RFA??

im not one to rag on people for keeping fish i do all the time even big fish but some common sense needs to be used or else your nephew who loved catching those big fish wont have a chance to in 20-30 years, and maybe it was in this case and all the meat will be put to good use but seeing limits of big breeders killed just doesnt seem like common sense. having these big fish in our jersey waters in the spring on bunker is awesome but our fishing community should also take some responsibility to preserve our stock. it just seemed a little much with the size and numbers that were kept. anyways that is one hell of a day of fishing, and i would hate for comments like mine and others to stop people from posting there catchs,it was just what .

Kill every bass you are legally aloud to keep, I for one, will never go out of my way to attend another meeting so i can point the finger at commercials....been there, done that. I admit...im in the minority .

It is funny how calm, cool, and collected Ken is and a guy who has previously claimmed to be a C&R guy (Christy) comes running to his defence when he didnt need it.

Dude you are laughable, you target spring spawners in a well known spawing ground and you slam another guy for wanting to eat a legal fish (post spawn)

About 10% of those die after you fight them but hey its fishing. You must think they all swim off happily and have lots of babies, if you really want to save the "endangered bass" STOP FISHING.

good work on and strecthing your arms nearly out of their sockets for those angles :D

and no i don't even know the guy it's just sad watching you guys slam people, A kid in this case, on their moment of celebration. These "opinions coveniently come uo mins after he post a pic, on HIS thread, But thats easy to do when you got internet muscles, why not wait at the docks and curse people out with fish when they come in? RC

So far none of your arguements make much sense, but if it makes you feel better ...well, than I guess thats all that counts.

Lets go with your logic for a second.....If I fished in a spawning area and 10% die (debateable) The other 90% of the bass will spawn many years to come:)

Now if someone were to catch and kill every legal bass they could (postspawn), the mortality rate is 100% correct (not debateable). Not only that, they will never spawn again:(

Stretching arms, I love it...more jealousy coming from someone who uses the word every chance he gets:D
Your arguements have more holes than swiss cheese:p

BTW I also catch and release spawning weakfish, drum, largemouth, albies, kings, trout, tuna ect....only difference is mine dont end up in a frying pan.

Tell eelball I said hello;) we know people in the same circles....oops i slipped up.

RC lets see some of your bass.....hold them out as far as you like.....:p You have caught one before....havent you?

Now take a deep breath...I have to gets some sleep, im going out for some post spawn bass....if thats cool with you.

I'll try to muster some response to your nearly incoherent ramblings throughout this thread.

If you want to talk about internet muscles and egos, why not tak a look at the people killing 2 or 3 big bass and for what? To eat? They taste like crap when they're that big, but this is something RC may not be aware of unless somebody gave him fillets of a big fish they caught. Those fish were killed because they were large fish and somebody wanted to weigh them or show them off.

In reference to the captains question about how many people who find killing that many big bass wrong are members of the rfa, I find that kind of excess to be wrong, and I'm not a member of the rfa. Their attitude is just as greedy as yours it would seem, to kill bass ourselves, yet keep the commercial guys from killing them. The RFA has done some very good things, but their position on bass is poor
