Gr8ful Fish

Took my buddy, Mike, aboard my "Bertha" on Sat. 7-7-07 for a morning of fluke fishing.
After having put Mike on an big 8-pointer out of my tree stand last fall, a nice gobbler this spring, and numerous successful striper trips this year and last, I am sure he had high hopes for a day of fluke clobbering similar to the one I experienced the previous afternoon.
We started at ~06:30 near the TC buoy but the crowds got extremely heavy ... and we weren't really knocking them dead. (I only had 3 keepers from 17.75" to 19" in the first 3 hours of drifting.):(
Moved around to few different spots near the #1 can, the SH channel and the coast guard ledge, but unfortunately, we just couldn't quite put a good catch together. We also couldn't find any good areas that weren't being blanketed with other boats.
We pulled the plug around 1:00 PM; I ended the day with 4 keepers up to 25"/6.5 pounds along with at least 15 or more shorts, a dozen birds and a couple of bats. Mike ended up missing a bunch of fish and landing a handful of shorts, and a couple of bats & birds. However, he failed to sling a single keeper over the rails. :(
Surprisingly, most of the areas where I found plenty of good fluke the day before seemed to have become overun with sea robins overnight. I suspect that a lot of the lack of activity was due to the high concentration of boats that were drifting through the same areas including a couple of extremely "railed" party boats.
Winds were light, skies were bright and sunny and water temps were 71-73 degrees.
Here's a photo of my 6.5-pounder.
Lookin' forward to takin' a break from the flatties to chase some pelagics ofshore with my bro and cc19 on Mon. Hopefully, by mid-week, the fluke will have forgotten about the 3,000 baits that they saw bounced around in front of them today, so "Bertha" and I can get back to beatin' up on them again.
