Well myself, stew and denny loaded up the boat and headed up to Block island R.I. for some spearfishing on sun. night our buddies were packing out a scallop trip in newport so we picked them up mon. morning and made the trip over to the island and none of us had ever been there so we were kind of taking a shot in the dark well after about an hr or so of learning the structure we starting seeing some bass and by the days end we had some quality fish in the boat with a few over the 30lb mark and the biggest a 36lber.

We decided to leave them off for now because everytime there is a bunch of fish laid out someone always has something to say about it.

There's a certain bass video floating around where they are fishing for big bass with plugs right next to that one rocky point. That is a classic spot!!

Drink,no just kidding that is really all i am good at,this trip here was more of a scouting trip so next time we are going to spend a bit more time up there and really get the place down but there are big bass around everywhere,i think we already planned the next trip up there before we even got home,oh and alot of those pics are from newport and pt judith not of block island we were too busy diving over on block to take pics

tom, i honestly have no idea about block island.. we ran the boat over from newport and didn't set foot on the island... i can say based on our experience up there this particular monday the bass were higher in the water column than they usually are down here....
there's bottom structure everywhere: kelp covered rocks, boulders, ledges, etc..
there are a ton of rips as well... we usually just jumped in when we liked what we saw. everything looks fishy up there (including the trees)!
i have a feeling we missed some of the best spots on the island.. so i guess we'll just have to go back to figure them all out!!
6 man limit from monday.. adam and denny are holding up the two biggest fish, both longer than 43".. the two smallest were 31.5 inches...

Block Island will never let you down. This is the first year in a long time where I didnt make a spring trip up that way. I usually spend may in Montauk and often fish block island for fluke. The bass are also there and 30lb fish are common. You put it perfect when you said every place is fishy. When your from SJ and used to sandy bottom and go there its like you died and went to heaven.
Did you happen to see any fluke?
Also I heard a rumor that the CG is busting stones if you caught bass fishing anywhere east of the sub bouy, any truth to that?
Nice job

Oh man come on and drop those tanks its so much more fun without all that stuff on your back we might not get the bottom time you do but afterall none of the crew except for one are scuba certified

I free dive too. But it's something to just lay on the bottom and watch the fish interact with each other and see what they do down there. I was watching a flounder eat the other day, awesome sight to see. If I was free diving he would have just been shot and I would have missed the show. I layed on a rock and watched a school of 20" 24" Stripers hunting small butters around a piling, very cool to see. We going to try rigging a smole pole with a string and bait and see what the flounder actually does when you are trying to catch with a fishing pole from the boat..figure it's kinda like a scientific study to improve on my fishing:D .

I'm a rookie in the whole spearfishing thing. But I can tell you it is pretty cool. You definitely seem some amazing stuff....fish included. Plus, holding your breath for that long is no easy feat. Those that say spearfishing is cheating don't know what they are talking about. It definitely is not easy, and you know right away what kind of cardiovascular conditioning you posess.....

bill, i don't know the bouy you mentioned but it wouldn't surprise me..
i saw a couple of fluke, both around 18 inches.. didn't pull the trigger as they have to be 19 to keep up there..
denny saw about a 10 pounder sitting on a rock but didn't want to screw up the tip of his spearshaft by shooting it on the rock.. the shafts aren;t inexpensive..

We went up last year for two days in July and we used porgies to liveline a few then we trolled to get our limit the first day. The second day it was all trolling for our limit. I skipped this years trip but my buddy Joe just gor back and they limited out both days this year also.Mostly trolling wire and tubes tipped with a blood worm. Heres a picture of my bud Joe from our trip last year with Block Island in the background. We left out of Point Judith. http/: (http://www.thebassbarn.com/forum/http/:)http://momentoffame.com/photopost/data/501/thumbs/SLEM_AT_BLOCK_ISLAND.jpg (http://momentoffame.com/photopost/showphoto.php/photo/69190)

Anyone know of anybody who has one of the snuba kits? I did that in the carribean for the first time and it was a blast..we were down about 40-60 ft with no problems..they had an air tank but I've seen the units in overtons with the little 5 hp honda motors on it...seems easier/chaper than dive gear? Would be cool to see what's down in some of my fav spots

I prefer the challenge of freediving plus it keeps you in tremendous shape, also alot of the larger and warier fish get spooked by bubbles where as a freediver emits no bubbles

I was out at Block island two weeks ago. The water was crystal clear, almost too clear as the bass could see us from way to far away. We ended up looking for current breaks to cloud up the water a bit to hide. We ended up with four fish over 30 lbs with the largest just a oz shy of 39.
That place is great with tons of strucure and little pressure.

Yes, we dove the southwest corner (don't know the area names) Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings. We hit the North shore in the afternoon Friday and Saturday.
Fish were everywhere. One cool, but kind of scary site, was a blue fish blitz about 25 ft away from me. I was about 1/4 mile from shore and coming up from the bottom and all I saw this mass of fish and foam. I high tailed it out of there hoping that I would become the new bait ball.
