Any truth to the report that a fishing organization, marina, or other business has a standing $ 100,000 offer / prize for catching a new world record size Striped Bass on rod and reel ????

If that's the case...........I may just have to break my catch and release philosophy if I catch a HUGE Striper that looks way bigger than 60lbs.....

A least weight it to check before releasing.........

A solid 80 pounder should do it !!

Don't know, never heard that one. There was a standing prize when Al got his record, but I haven't heard of it coming up again since 1982.

You should look more into it before getting your hopes up, though... :o

I don't recall hearing of any bounty/reward/prize going on right now or indefinitely. Sometimes tournaments will have a rider for world-record/record-breaking fish that may earn a prize that big or bigger. These days, I'd think the endorsement deals would total way more than a $100,000 prize anyway.

Well, I'm thinking about catching a world record size Striper.....80+ lbs. on a live Bunker.

Then I'll cash in.

I think you're right about the $100,000 being tied to a tourny.

Thanks

Exactly, way more.

I agree with Smellin fishy...you would get at least $1m for a record striper between the mounts and endorsements.

As for endorsements, here's the trick - don't take any pictures of the fish with the plug or bait hanging from its mouth and don't tell anyone what you caught it on. This way you can negotiate with all the big companies before announcing what you caught it on. As part of those negotiations, you’d want a percent of the sales of the particular “lure” (can not be bait) that landed the monster. I'm guessing the record breaker will be caught on a lure made by Berkley attached to a Berkley line and leader.

I pity the poor bastard that breaks it, he/she will be second guessed on everything they did....But then again the money should alleviate any negative allegations from jealous a$$hole co-anglers:D

I dont know if Mr McReynolds would agree with the above statement. Money has a way of turning bad.

Anyway, I think we will see a record fish caught in the next 2 years, thinking it could happen this fall with how strange our spring run has been.

Pure Fishing Co. would be my first "choice";) ;) for the lure I caught it on. I think they are the largest tackle company out there, I think.

I've already declared my plan to catch the world record Striper.........so that's that !!

Now all I have to do is find it, entice it, land it, and become famous from there. First, I'll call the Fisherman, NJ Sportsman, Salt Water Angler, etc.,

Easy enough plan. Got you guys itchin' to make it happen hu ?

80lbs plus. That's my goal.

I wouldn't get too excited to about breaking the world record, I got it in the bag with a 73 lber that I caught June and have kept quiet about. I have been keeping her alive in my bathtub feeding her PBJB (PeanutButter, Jelly & Bunker) sandwiches until she is fatten up enough to break Al's record......:D

It's likely to read like this............." NJ man catches enormous Striped Bass, shattering previous record by more than 15lbs."

The Bass, weighed in on official scale just shy of 100lbs is the largest ever caught on rod and reel.........etc, etc.

Yeh, and while I'm at it, I think I'll fish for a world record sea robin too, just on account of why not. The giant winged fish looking much like a world war 1 fighter plane, was caught on a squid strip,.........

i read multiple times that Al McReynolds never saw a nickle from his record catch...

as far as endorsements are concerned, i think even if you caught a 110lb striper, if you don't have the personality and desire to sell yourself out like prostitute (like Mike Iaconelli) you'd probably not see much fame...

I like the stories I hear of Al M., to this day you could bump into him on a beach somewhere and not even realize it's him...

I know for a fact that Al rec'd a considerable amount for his WR. I also know someone who shared in that to a lesser degree. As far as not knowing it was Al if you bumped into him, believe me when I say, he would be the first to tell you that he is the world record holder. Al will be showing up in about 5 weeks in preparation for the Mullet run.

Rules have changed since Al Caught his record fish. Since designation as a game fish, the reporting standards are much stricter. It will be harder to get certification. Therefore, if you are using the wrong equipment and the company isn't interested in ponying up for the publicity (which they would now get for free in the certification process) I would think that it would be less likely that a big payday would occur. If you are in a tourney, some have bonus features (usulaly covered by insurance similar to hole in one insurance for golf) you may get a big payoff. Utsch's tourney has a 100k bonus for a WR.

Those offering the big money prize know what they are doing. We have taken so many 30"+ fish in the past several years that the odds of any striper growing to record size won't happen soon if ever.

Enough guys at Marina's and Bait shops know me to confirm well enough.

Anyway, it's out there - with a bunch of other biggie's ranging from
60lbs - 100lbs that hang together. They swim from Montauk, down across the rocks to off AC and back, feeding on first Mackerel, then Herring, then Bunker and a few other assorted - crabs, baby flatties etc.
Every year, a few of the nearly huge get picked off by fishermen.

Think I saw one of them a few miles off Belmar about three weeks ago.
I was headed over to my spot at the Shrewsbury Rocks to chunk the fresh ( still live ) bunker that I snagged.....about 1/4 mile from the spot my buddy / rookie striper fisherman says "what's that swirling". It was nearly flat, and from what I could see, was a real biggie Striper, got to see some tails.
I caught three little ones....18 - 25lb class which the rookie was amazed to see among all those fishing for flatties.......
