Have Fun Guys,,,,
-----------------------------------------------

We launched our Kayak into the darkest of Barnegat Bay over the weekend.

Once you found the bait you found plenty of action with weakfish and bluefish..Tides were running hard and dirty with alot of the eelgrass that came in from the ocean last week.So the key was to anchor up and fish around the patches of grass as it swept by us..
The strikes were many on lead jigs and assorted color rubber, sometimes right beside the yak..

Awesome pics Nightstrikes! Sounds like a great night. I went down last night just before dark and got skunked. I was stubborn and wanted to catch them on poppers but it was a bit too windy. I still had a great time. Hopefully I will be getting down this weekend since Jettyjock and my friend Ed have new kayaks to break in! Tom.

Hit Cape May County back bays last night from 8:00p to 10:30p. Found bass popping while still light around first bend. 2nd cast and 28 incher to the yak. (small popper). Looked like a promising night. Continued to my planned location and the further back I got the more snot grass I encountered. Pods of grass 10 feet wide were floating with the tide. Found more fish popping during the night but could not keep the grass off the lures. Before I left checked to see what they were chasing and found hundreds of 3 inch glass type minows up against the banks.
New Kayak worked great http://www.myfishpix.com/gallery/data/539/tarpon120web.jpg

Got out behind OC the other night. The fish were very active and popping all over the place.

The problem was the weed. Maybe one out of every ten casts stayed clean. Not much luck.

Where are you finding all these weakies??

Just thought I would share a helpful program I found on the internet. It allows you to look for different fishing spots using sattelite photos. Beware that the photos are about 3 years old but still show you a good look of what is out there. It also allows you to measure distance so you can plan a kayak trip to see if that place you want to fish is close enough for a night time excursion. The program is called google earth and can be downloaded for free. Just do a google search for google earth. Here is an example of a plotted trip in Townsends Inlet area. As you plot your lines it gives you a total mileage as you continue to add distance. I have located a few new spots to try using this program. Thought others maybe able to use it also. http://www.myfishpix.com/gallery/data/500/townsendweb.jpg

Nice ride you got there. What make/model is it. I looking into getting a Yak this fall, and been doing a lot of research. Ive tried Kayak fishing the past two years up in Long Island. I thought it was amazing, and cant wait to get my own. Im just saving some money so I can rig up the Kayak with all the accessories I need.
Also, I think I met you and Sic Yakker at the NJ Angler Tournament. My friend and I were standing in line with you two, and I think it was Sic Yakker's son brought a nice Blue to the scales.
Any info form you guys would be helpful.
Thanks,
Mike

Wow, It looks like mine . A Tarpon 120 right. Have only "freshwatered" mine so far. How does it surf? Most of the reviews said good things. I found mine 1/2 price at a local store. Guy said it didn't sell. I jumped at it. tongue.gif I want to put a rudder/fishfinder on mine before fall. Yak on!

Kenuloza / Mike, How are you doing? I remember you and your friend from the tourney. Jettyjock's kayak is a Wilderness Systems Tarpon 120. I have a Tarpon 140. I opted for the 14 ft. model because of my size. I am sure that JJ will respond to your questions as well. I LOVE my Tarpon and I know that JJ is pleased with his as well. Good luck and I hope to see you out in a kayak soon! Tom.

Mike,
SicYaker is correct my ride is a Wilderness System Tarpon 120. I had a Cobra Explorer before. This one is faster and less hull slap. Also able to be set up better for fishing. There is several places locally to get one if you are interested in this model. Like SicYaker said there is the 120, 140 and 160. Depending on your height and weight one of these models will fit you good for what type of fishing you plan on doing. The place I purchased mine is not a sponser to the barn so email me and I can give you a couple of options if you are looking to buy.

There's more than that. There is a T100 for quite water or kids, I am breaking my son in on some freshwater, and just bought him a "ripper", (T80).

Landed 4 between 24" and 28" a couple nights ago at CISP. Lost two at the yak and missed a few more. Not bad for August.

Launched in Wreck inlet yesterday, caught three spikes, all 121/4" at the bottom of the tide. When the tide changed, the bite shut down, with cold dirty water. The cool thing was, I could see large schooles of Weakies up on the bars! I have seen that before, but not recently. There was tons of bait, saw Mullet for the 1st time this season, along with peanut Bunker,& Spearing. The inlet has change alot since Spring! It's pretty nasty on the incoming, I only saw 1 boat all day. Greenheads were pretty thick, had to resort to Deet! Oh yeah, the tide cuts you off from the north end, or returning from the north end, about half tide now! Which can be a good thing if you like solitude, and have the time. Can't wait to get back up there, with some good weather.Does anyone here, have a Brig.4 whl pass, and Kayaks??

Question, does anyone have a Pungo Yak? I have had one for 2 yrs now and love it! Its a Sit In though. Was wondering if anyone has fallen out in water over your head? How hard is it to get back into the boat. Haven't had to try and was wondering if anyone has experience. Bought a Paddle Float a few weeks back (just being responsible) and was gonna give it a try while the water was still warm

Hey Gannet. I have a Tarpon 140. I mostly fish the back bay areas and bridges at night but am interested in trying the ocean if you want to guide. I have a 4x4 and beach permit for Brig. Cell 215-738-2156.

jc, i don't have a pungo, but i've used them in the keys. they are pretty tough to get back into if you are in deeper water. you should try it one day without any fishing stuff with you (in a pool would be the best way), and see how you make out. i'm not familiar with how effective the paddle float is, but it can't hurt.

now, i was using a friend's sit in kayak a few years ago to surf the waves at the sandbar in OC. the waves were big, and breaking kind of far out. i flipped, and the kayak filled with water. i was able to get most of the water out with the help of another friend on his kayak, and then i climbed back on after many attempts by going over the nose of the kayak, and carefully pulling myself up into the cockpit area. that one episode made me decide never to go with a sit in kayak. i now have a tarpon 120, and if i go over, it's easy to get back on and get myself moving again.

by the way, if last night behind margate is any indication, it's going to be a good late summer and early fall.

Dogcatcher, I usually launch from Absecon inlet to access the ocean. I'm off Sun./Mon., and would like to hook up with some people who kayak fish in the area! I paddle a FnD, not really the best ocean boat, but I do go when the wind co-ops. I want to do the north end to Holgate a few times, once the Greenheads subside alittle. I know some sweet spots on the back side of Littlebeach, and I have a LBI beach pass, which I'd like to use this fall. I just need some buddies to hang with.
Egghead, I can get 2 yaks in my truck, if you ever want to give Wreck inlet a try!
Barrel, if you ever want to do some day time fishing up north, give me a ring. I want to Demo that new Hobie, when it comes out!!! Keep us posted...

It seems that most kayak fishermen are like myself, they fish alone and usually late at night. Even when I have tried to take others, they either don't go (once they get the details) or go once and stop.

I have never fished the ocean from a kayak on the north end of brig myself, being somewhat intimidated by current, surf, etc... I, like many others, would love to give it a go, provided at least one other person was there who has a little experience. I think I would even like to cross over to do some surf fishing from the other side.

Gannet, egghead, barrell, madplugger, stevenK, Lew, anyone else I missed, is there any interest in picking a day when several people would be available to hit the north end? We can make it a pre-fall test run and get comfortable for some fall solo runs. Let me know who is interested, and when you are available. Unfortunately, I have the interest, but lack the experience. Weekends in Sept look open (until the wife tells me otherwise). Thanks.

I was thinking next Sun. the 28th, but I pretty much yak every Sun/Mon, weather/holidays permiting. I could probably transport 2 other yaks on my truck, and even make a couple trips if we had to, here in Brig.. I'd be happy to show any fellow paddle fisher persons, the Brig./Little beach area. Lets do it, I'm up for a weekly tour of south & central Jersey! IBSP,LEI,GE,CISP,TI,CSI you guys name it I'm in!
I think we need to know what everyone paddles, and their experience first. Who is interested in next Sun., and what do you paddle/peddle? Lets get the ball rollin..Anybody off Mondays? :D

Sunday evening 8/28 sounds good. High tide is around 3:46 p.m. The north end should be open later that evening. If that sounds ok to all, let me know a time.

I have a Tarpon 140. My experience is limited to back bay fishing and some playing around in the surf in a shorter surf kayak. Fished with Barrell in the early spring. Would love to test one of those foot paddle yaks, if we can fit that in.

Dogcatcher you're right on. Anytime I've fished with someone it's been a non yakker. I would love to hook up with any of you hard core guys. I fish mostly OC/SP bridges and back bay. Dying to try the big pond but won't do it alone. I captain a blue Malibu II that needs some accessorizing. Would love to get some ideas from seeing other yaks. Cell - 892-7310

I fished the ocean yesterday from the yak. Croakers everywhere, as soon as I got around front! They weather was great, and the ocean was clean, but no weaks or fluke.
I was out front Monday on a boat, and we saw Albies everywhere crashing bait on top! They wouldn't take anything we were throwing, but man what a sight. I wish we had more time, and some trolling gear. We were fluking, got small fluke, and hardheads. Love that ocean fishing, never know what you'll see. We came in Wreck inlet, jumped the bar at high tide! It's do-able at high, we were reading 4 ft. on top of the bar, straight out the inlet. Thanks again Barrel, can't stop thinking about the other sightings...

wish I could make it to the North end on Sunday but am already commited. I'm sure I'll meet up with some of you guys eventually. The air is starting to take on a fallish quality, makes me start to get exited for fishing. Soon enough we'll have the beaches to ourselves again and we'll all be going for kayak rides hitched up to big cow bass heading north!!!

Took the Kayak out in the Salt water for the first time this morning. Fished behind Avalon from about 6:15am-9:30am. Boat traffic wasn't bad.
Since this was the first trip, I was only going to drift around for some flounder just so I could get comfortable. Didn't get any fluke, but did catch a bunch of tiny sea bass (6-10 inches).
A lot of bait fish were breaking the service for the first hour. (should have brought some
Fin-s).
Anyway, next trip may out front or at night in the back bays. I think Im ready!!!
