Procastinator called to let me know that he and his crew of Dave and Dave's 6-year old son hammered the big fluke on Thursday. (Don't you just love getting those "we hammered em!" reports when you just spent the whole day working?)
According to Pro, he took his "Rod Bender II" quite a few miles SE of Sandy Hook into some areas more traditionally favored for anglers targeting toothy critters. First few areas he plied were uneventful with only shorts and few sea bass. However, he eventually hit paydirt when one drift resulted in an instantaneous double-header of nice fluke in the 7-8 pound range for himself and Dave ... not doormats, but certainly nice placemats!!!
Repeated drifts in the area showed a good concentration of big fish in an extremely small area, so rather than continue drifting over them (which only gave them a quick shot before you would pass the spot) Pro decided to anchor right on his "MOB mark."
The choice to throw the hook was good one! While at anchor, the entire crew enjoyed a steady bite of big fluke and some bonus keeper sea bass. As an added bonus, being anchored enabled the youngster to truly catch his own fish much more easily. According to Pro, he was bailing them pretty good, and he ended with a few from 5-8 pounds.
Pro was especially pround of his catch of a 8-pound fluke in 60' of water on a light tackle spinning combo while using a 3/4 oz. jig. Now that's fishing a small light tackle offering in some deep water!  He didn't mention, but I suspect that jigs tipped with live peanuts were the bait-du-jour. ;)
At the fillet table, he turned the 24 placemats into an entire 5-gallon bucket full of cleaned fillets ... I'm guessing there's gonna be a "Hillbilly Fish Fry" up in Montoursville sometime next week. :D
Pro's out there again today, but sadly, I didn't get much of report, because I had to call him to relay the message that our 97-year old great grandmother passed away this morning. Pro said that he was going to catch a good one in honor of her today.
Our Nanny Grace was a sharp, old woman, and she was tougher than a Waffle House steak! Up until 2 weeks ago, she lived by herself in her own apartment in Shamokin, PA. She always used ot get so excited when we would give her fresh fish that we had caught, and one year Pro actrually wrapped up a 6-pound frozen trout in wrapping paper, becasue all she wanted from us was some fish for Christmas. She will be missed! :(
