Procastinator took me and our cousin, Ned, out for a day of sea bassing on Sunday, 9-23-07.
Started the day with some heavy birdplay from the Highlands Bridge area all the way down to the SH reef. We played with the big choppers for a while with jigs & spoons which immediately resulted in easy 8-10 lbs. bluefish action.
Unfortunately, my 1st bluefish snapped the tip off of my spinning rod approximatly 1' down as I was reaching down to land it. (Piece of crap Quantum Blue Runner!) No problem, I brought a back-up.
One cast later, I hooked up with another big bluefish, and when I got it to the boat there was a horrible sound that ended in catastrophic failure of my Penn Power Graph spinning rod. The rod literally disintegrated into 5 or 6 different pieces. 2 bluefish, 2 broken rods ... YIKES!!!
Headed offshore to some offshore rough bottom areas and during the day we switched back and forth from anchoring to drifting depending upon wind/tide conditions and the size of the individual rough bottom patches.
Ended the day with 16 nice keeper sea bass over 14" including a couple of real nice knuckleheads. We must have released at least another 20 or more shorts each along with a couple of really nice fluke. Unfortuantely, Ned never got a chance to hang any keepers, but he had a good time keeping busy with the shorts and absorbing a little bit of ribbing about his lack of success. ;) :D
Just before heading in, we stopped and tried setting a chum slick to see if we could find a stray bass. Hooked a couple of bluefish for Ned to play with, and he lost a few others. We did have one bass hooked up for a while, but it spit the hook before Ned could land it. :(
Another good day of fishing aboard the "Rod Bender II" with fat sacks of tasty fillets for everyone at the end of the day.
