That's a tough one, I don't really have a go to bait for all the time. I have plenty that I like to throw, but there's times I wouldn't throw them at all because I think something else might be a better choice.
Hard baits I think what catches me more fish year-round is a spinnerbait (would you call that a hard bait?) If not, then lipless cranks.
For a soft bait I think a senko would be most likely to get bit day by day.

Softbait - the 4" sticks that I pour T-rigged with a bullet weight
Or, since only I have those, the PC Baits "Thing" which is a crazy creature type bait that you can customize http://www.pcbaits.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=15&zenid=d06a8a546e4e24e212dba8cf845b857d
Hard baits: PC Baits pointer or shad colored crankbait.

This shell cracker you mention is it the Black Dog Shell Cracker? I had never heard of this lure prior, did some searching and it looks very interesting? The blue gill model seems as though it could be a good choice.

NJVBASS,
i missed the part that this lure goes for $59.00 each. No way in hel* would i be throwing a 60$ lure to any fish. But befor i jump the gun i guess i should research other swim baits, and will for price reference. Either way interesting looking bait just alittel over the top on the price.;)

it all depends on the season but for the summer my goto baits are 1. a jig 2. plastic baits. Tubes, creature tubes, beavers, senko... etc.
But before i jump the gun i guess i should research other swim baits, and will for price reference.

You should see some of the fish he catches on that thing. When you have a lure that's capable of cetting you 10 NJ fish per year over 5 lbs, maybe it's worth it. Do you buy lucky craft? If you think about it, it's only 4 of them, and how many 5's do they produce? Not that they don't catch big fish, but the swimbaits almost only catch big fish.

True if i added up all the $$ i spend or have spent on tackle i would prob pass out. i know though i get real pissed when i catch a damn tree and lose my 10$ lure. But im sure they produce no doubt.

Swimbaiting involves more tackle for sure. You can't throw 2-4oz lures effectively on tradional bass tackle. Sometimes you have to throw standard lures , but I always see if the big bait is happening before I pick up a 3/16 pegged creature and drag bottom.
this is my biggest bass this year so far on the shellcracker. 6.5# :D
This is also my second one. I had something break me off about 2 months ago.
I throw it on a 7'10 x-heavy setyr swimbait rod
