Never really fished for Bass from a boat always from the beach. Now that I own a boat I've got some questions. When fishing CM Rips do you drift or anchor up? I would imagine same types of bait, eel, clams, fresh bunker and blood worms. When you troll what type of luhrs are needed? Any other info would be appreciated as well. Can't wait:D

Rips is drifting only. Be carefull there are many shallow spots you need to be alert to. Many use live bait in the rips and you can use other baits as well but live seems to be the preferred. For chunking up the bay you can anchor up and use bunker, clams.

Definitely drift. Don't anchor, please don't anchor. After your drift make a wide swing around the area being fished to get back in position. Too many idiots run right back overtop of where they just caught fish only to spook them for themselves and everyone else.

Don't "BURN" the rip as the Skirtchaser would say. Although according to him , anyone fishing the rips besides him was guility of burning the rip.

Frank,
Here is an excellent post by one of the best "rippers" http://www.thebassbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4290&highlight=rips
You may want to consider going out with either Skip or Adam to observe their techniques prior to trying it solo.

As mentioned in a previous post be careful of the shallow spots. The one which comes to mind is the prissywicks(sp?) shoal/rips.Stay clear of them. You also should watch your direction when it's movin keep your nose in.Watched a guy bury it one of those rips once:eek: .It might be best to fish it with someone elese first. There's a bunch of guy's from your new marina who fish there.:)

The prissy has a few areas that have around 3 ft or so of water. Your charts or chartplotter will show the areas, or the big standing wave will give it away. When you see a rip line that has a 1 to 2ft wave and 100 yds away down the line a 4 footer is breaking, you can be sure it's not as deep in that spot. As mentioned before take a charter with a boat that fishes the rips alot, Stalker & Adam Bomb are great choices. You'll learn more in six hours than on your own rig for 6 weeks.

The rips are not for rookies, I have seem more then 1 boat flip, or take a nose dive. I would have to agree take a trip or 2 with someone who has been out before. You also don't have to fish in the most crowded areas either. Use your sounder and find some holes and see what's there. Make sure you don't fly staight back up to set up your drift just because you had a run off, take the long way around and help keep the fish along the rip. You will PI$$ the regulars off if you run through their drift line. Talk to guys on your dock you should get some goog advise. Don't hestitate to follow a head boat for general location. And watch Prissy Wick, there is some very skinny water there. Live bait works best, bucktails will work as well. Pick your days, even nice days can be sporty with the right wind. Use common sense.

Go with someone who knows how to fish there first. Then go again with them. And when you are ready go, go one more time with them. LOL
Seriously....learn with someone who knows how to fish there and soak up as much info as you can. They can get pretty hairy at times and you dont want to do something wrong cause the sharpies down there will never let you forget. As for bait in the rips...alot use eels, but I have seen more people using spot in the past.
In a 32ft boat you are plenty safe, and you only chance hitting bottom in a couple of spots on the lowest tide. Starting in about 2 weeks, there will be hundreds of boats there everyday. Just look at a chart and keep your eyes open and you will figure it out quickly.
