That's a heck of a fish! While I cannot blame the guy for keeping her, the reality of her death is that she will never again lay eggs that produce extra large fish. Hopefully, there are a number of her female offspring still swimming, and laying eggs that make giants.

Has there ever been any proof that genetics play into the size of a bass's offspring? I was under the impression that every bass grows at the same rate under the same conditions. It's just the amount of eggs that differ. The bigger the fish the more eggs it lays.

Hi Young Gun 24,
I'm not a professional icthyologist, or anything close, but I do follow the information concerning the environment and its inhabitants. There is information out there that speaks of all Striped Bass as being of the same species, but also having a genetic disposition to produce differently striped variations, as well as differently sized fish within the species. This also appears to be true in studies of Salmon.
Human Beings, are all created with the same humanity and internal characteristics, yet we also display within the species, genetic differences that produce individuals with unique characteristics of size, shape, etc. It seems to me that the Striped Bass would have the same genetic tendencies.

from the looks of thast fish it looks like it had plenty of time to produce eggs and offspring through out her life. Its better than killing a small bass that has big offspring genetics that has not had time to reproduce.
That is an awesome fish. Imagine hooking into that beast from the beach or rocks.

I was there on Saturday when that fish was brought in and weighed. It shattered the old dock record and was huge. The fish was caught off of the point using porgie. Dont remember the full name of the boat but was Top... something or other.

In pictures 9 through 14 they aren't even holding the fish. It almost seems like it is hollow. Even the pictures where they are holding the fish they aren't even straining to lift it. They could lift it with there pinky.

I was there this weekend as well. The head alone on that fish was out of site. I took some pixs on my blackberry but they just don't do it justice.

That fish only weighed 67.5 lbs?
Underscores just how radically most fishermen over estimate the weight of their fish.
It does look like West lake marina in the background. I know it pretty well. As to where he caught it I would guess either in the race (the place where long island sound meets the ocean & talk about current), the rips (the rips stretch from Montauk to Block Island, go look at a map and see how long that is) or one of the other famous spots out there.
It is definately the fishing mecca.
For years I would run a early November trip out there on one of better charter boats for 2 full days of togging and bassing.
The bass you usually get one of three ways
1) You bounce 6 oz OR SO diamond jigs in 55 to 60 of water right by the rips
2) You troll 300 feet of wire and your lure of choice (parachute setups are real big up there and a pisser when a big bass slams them as you are working the rod)
3) Use either eels, porgies or some other live bait.
Just writing this makes me want to put a crew together and head up there.
Great fishery.
