Can you use clam at night or is it just a day thing. I have never tried it at night, always using the plugs or eel. I'm going to try on the next trip.

That's when I always seem to do the best. Fishing at night is better anyway because this time of the year all the ignorant people are gone too, so it's just you and maybe a few sharpies.

It seems that once that water temp drops a bit though the skates and doggies will move out, at least to some extent.

depends on where you fish for the junk fish to move out, I've fished back areas of sea isle and avalon in late Nov and early dec and still caught skates and small doggies. Sometimes when you bottom fish with clam on a fishfinder rig you'll have alot of junkfish hook ups also-Try a fish finder rig with a floating bucktail and a strip of clam for bait when the junk fish are around.]

I've used a 3 way before with a super long lead to the sinker so that the bait sat about 2-3 feet off bottom to stay away from the skates. The doggies still get at it though.

Dogs I'm allright with, the big ones have saved the day when I've had inexperienced friends on the boat before. Skates, forget it. I hate every species of skates out there.

Perchhead, I use clams at night from the surf and from boat. Seems to be a better bite at night. They usually come up and take it faster.

Hey makowish, I am going to try it this weekend. I will probably slaughter the sharks and skates but hey it can only get better. Please will someone tell mother nature its fall, these 70 degree days are a joke.
