Fished saturday out with the fleet at the 60'. 8am to 3:30 without so much as a tap. 3:30 the one and only hook up of the day. Got the fish to the side of the boat, it was the biggest striper I've ever seen, tried to net it without sucess. The fish pulled away from the boat. My buddy that hooked the fish tried to horse the fish back and when he did he lifted the fishes head out of the water , the end of the rod broke off and so did the line. It would have been his first striper:D I know the fish as over 50lbs.
I've handled some big fish, but I've never even been close to any thing that size. Maybe next time:confused:

ouch, sorry to hear that. Always seems like its the big ones that seem to get away. I lost a big one last year that I never got to see and haunted me for weeks, I hoarsed the fish when it had me pinned under the boat and popped 40 lb leader. Lesson learned that day, never hoarse a fish and let the drag and rod tire them out... Keep at it, youll get another shot.

Nice to see a fish that big-sorry about the rod but it adds to the good fish story.

I use a gaff on big fish plus I got a bigger net for the passengers who don't know how to gaff a fish when I have one on.

IF YOUR PINNED UNDER THE BOAT AND THINK YOUR ABOUT TO BE CUT OFF--GO TO FREE SPOOL WITH LITE THUMB AND SEE IF HE WANTS TO GO BOW OR STERN HAVE SOMEONE GRAB YOUR BELT OR ANYTHING SO YOU CAN GET AS DEEP AS YOU NEED.WHEN YOU PUT PRESSURE BACK DO IT SLOWLY.

Biggest - I applied to much pressure and probably cost me my biggest (pun intended :D ) fish on the bay as I have never had one hunker down on me where it wasnt budging at all. My only excuse is we were catching big blues that day and I was winded from bailing the blues and should have played the fish longer vs trying to apply too much pressure. Uncle was standing right next to me telling me no to hoarse the fish but you live and learn on the big fish.... Still cant believe the fish wouldnt budge under the back of the boat as it was screamin drag for a while b4 that...
