Saturday we got out and it was down right sh**ty out in that bay but we made our way to a spot in the lower bay we have been fishing all year and set-up for the flood. About an hour into the tide we get one on and are thinking alright we are not taking the skunk 3 times in a row this year. WRONG! 10-12 pound bluefish was Palm Beach released boat side. Ok no big deal get the baits back out and then the brown plague showed up. We were sitting in pretty clean 51 degree water and this line of the ugliest brown 48 degree water rolled up on us and we got the hell out of there in a hurry. We pointed the boat up the bay and ran to a spot a little spot we liked on the chart and all agreed on. Much cleaner water was up there and warmer at 52 degrees. We set up the spread and made the best out of the remainder of the flood by boating our only shot of the day a nice 35” fish.

Sorry no pictures this day as the camera was out of batteries.

The bay was much nicer to us (at least in the morning Sunday) as we made our way to the same spot we fished Saturday in the afternoon at 31 knots with no problem. After a little hunting we found the depth and water quality we wanted as well as a lot of bait on the machine. We got on the hook and had fish on before the tide even started moving boating a 35” fish. Then the tide started to trickle and it was GAME ON as we started boating fish left and right for the next 2-3 hours. The only downside to all of this is that 5-10 knot wind out of the East they forecasted was more like 15-20 and the sheep were back stretching clear across the bay. But we didn’t mind it much because there were points where we had 2 fish on at a time! It was insane. Ahhhhhh the chunk bite we waited all year for was finally here. What a relief! There is nothing quite like the sound of a bait runner screaming off if you ask me. Total for the day was 8 for 10 with the biggest fish being 38 inches and we released a couple shorts and keep half a dozen for the table. Everyone is eatin’ good in the neighborhood this week. Not the larger bay fish we typically find but these guys all got a free ride home.

Here are some pictures of the catch from Sunday.

Take note how clean the water is!

Nice Report Gary our day finally came! I guess after so many sour trips you get that Sweet one! (Although half of my sour trips weren't on the Widowmaker) It goes to show you pay your dues and you get rewarded. Best thing was we were all alone!

You can tell it was a bussiness trip for Pop!

If you look closely you can see a red delicious in the background in between you and Pop!!!

Way to get 'em, Gary! Give you guys credit for hangin' in on Sunday... sounds like it got real sporty out there in the afternoon. There is nothing like having them turn on like that.

Great Pics!

We did real good. Took my boat to a couple of inshore wrecks and limited out. Bite was crazy for most of the day. Lots of shorts and nothing bigger than 5 pounds or so, but I'll take that any day. We were just a couple miles of the beach. Saw a couple of stripers taken as well. Conditions were pretty nice out front. Hopefully be doing it again on Saturday.

You can if you plan to free spool the fish if you are using live bait while drifting. We mostly use tri-swivel set-up when using live bait in the rips. Fish finders all day long for chunking the bay though.

way to go gary, and i am glad to see the high octane in the picture!!! it helps keep you warm in the colder weather!!!!! i fished on the beach in brigantine friday and lost a nice one in the wash. it was ok though, my buddy took a header trying to grab the slob, which we laughed about all weekend and at the birds game. good to see you ant ty on the meat again,as usual!!!!

It depends how hard that tide is running, your going to want to use a decent amout of weight while going through the rip-line. I would say start at a 4 then work your way up if your not holding bottom.

Thanks Rob! We switched back from mid-grade to high octane recently. "When it hits your lips it's so good!" HAHAHA Bummer about the losing that nice one in the suds. You will get him next time.

Striperfishing101:

I think you are talking about weight in the rips. I would say as light as possible while still holding bottom. Maybe 2 oz. when tide is slow and heavier when its running fast. We have actually found that weight can be a factor when drift fishing the rips with live bait. I'm not sure if the fish see the weight and get spooked or what but lighter is definitely bettter! ;)

Gary's memory is a lot better then mine, If your good with a bucktail I would just cast into the rip-line and jig while you SLOWLY retrieve. We rarely ever use live bait unless we plan on making a day out of the rips then we'll put out an eel rig and let the boat get a hook-up.
