I'm looking for Santa to bring me an early gift. I want to hear your suggestions on a conventional striper jigging set up. I prefer AVET reels but i'm open to anything. My price range is @ 250-300. Thanks.

if you go with the SX that doesnt leave much for a rod. for a little more you can get a great custom...if not then maybe look at the lami BL..

I guess a $200 reel does not leave too much for the rod.

I recently acquired a Torium for an 8' jig stick that I had built, but I otherwise used first Abu Garcia entry-level baitcasting reels and then Penn International 965 reels on muskie-style sticks to swing jigs up to 6 ounces without a problem.
The most important feature is the ability to easily go into and out of free spool as you work the jig. The rest is just mechanics, including the comfort of the handle.

I just put together a jigging/floundering/baitfishing combo for my brother, kinda' on the cheap...$140 or so total. Shimano Corvalus 300/301, All-Star Instinct series casting rod, 6'6" MH...should be readily available in small shops as well as D!ck's, Sports Authority, or the mail order houses. Spool with the 20# superline of your choice.
FWIW...YMMV

I have a shimano tekota 500 that ws about $150 and a lami triflex, 10-20lb rod that was about $110.(Cork Handle) This a great set up, light powerful. I have been handling 12 pound blues and 32 inch bass with no problem. You could probably also use it for fluke as well. You could use the Avet sx wih this rod and still be in your price range.

Depending on which Avet you want you may be able to get a custom rod. Chark Bait has Avet MXJ's on sale for $169 including shipping, click on the Clearance tab. I think they only have red and purple left. I have the Avet SX and MXJ and the MXJ is not too much larget. They are both a good 20-30lb reel.
