Went out the Barnegat Inlet this morning(wind against tide ) God!, I'm stupid, and headed north, boy, that's stupid. Someone told me once if you're 6 feet tall and you can't see over the tops of the waves you shouldn't be out there. " The sea is great and my boat is small", boy! I'm stupid! Having assumed the "end was near" I did what any fisherman would do, I broke out my favorite jigging stick. They're there all right, plenty of them. Caught a few, including a nice keeper and allowed that it looked like it was getting a little rougher. How the hell could you tell?! Figured I'd troll a "stretch" back to the inlet and see if my auto inflating life preserver would work. The waves were breaking over the bow at a slow troll, BOY, I'm stupid!!!! Fortunately they weren't taking a stretch so I didn't have to stop. You think/know I'm stupid? There were 3 souls in a "Grady" drifting broad side through the "white" out by the second set of cans. I could see one of them holding on for dear life. I lost a good boat out there Thanksgiving '04. God, I was lucky. I hope they were too.
Excellent report.
Been there and done that more than once.
Written like a true nutty fisherman.

It's an '04 201 Aquasport Osprey, "BAY BOAT". Fortunately it looks nothing like an Aquasport, with an aggressive hull and big bow flare it's an extremely good rough water boat, for it's size. If they had produced this boat sooner they might not have closed.
BTW, I bought this boat after losing a Wahoo at that second set of cans. I don't fish that place a lot any more.

You may be stupid, but you caught. Auto inflatable make you safer but no less stupid. :D
I've been out of TI in tight 4-5's. Best flounder days, right off the beach.
Thanks for the report.

Probably a following sea. A friend of mine just finished one and it's beautiful but going down the face of a wave is an adventure. As soon as you build up enough speed to get scary it suddenly turns to the port side and there's nothing you can do about it.

wahoo 11 how did you lose your previous boat?
Sorry, I've been working the last couple of days. I lost the boat going out on a day i shouldn't have, doing what i shouldn't have. Thanks Giving '04, was a "snotty day" . The birds were making up on the South Bar and i couldn't resist. There was only 2 other boats out that morning, 0ne, "the Riptide" was working the bar when I got there. I should mention Rip Tide is a bigger boat and is owned by a savy capt.. Anyway during the fun the seas started to break on top, when i turned to run in ,a rogue, way taller than me flipped the boat bow over stern. I almost came down on "the tide", fortunately we didn't lose our heads, and I didn't lose my a**. Those days I kept my 'preservers stowed below deck. I wear at least a belly vest when alone now. Thanks again "Rip Tide".

You see boats over do it, ie. they try to do something they shouldn't be doing, several times a year. I fish in the white water with a 26' Pacemaker Wahoo, which can take a solid 3 foot wave on it's beam and not go over. VERY few boats under 26 can take such a wave. If a wave graps you and steers you into a mis-directional swell, it could be all over for you. BE CAREFUL and only take what mother nature gives you.
Keep in mind if you go over in what was probably no warmer then 50 degree water you won't have long to be testing that PFD....
