View Full Version : Snow Storm Stripers

The Spool's Out crew took advantage of the calm before the storm and headed out for some striper trolling/jigging. We found bird play and good marks in 18' of water towards the south end of OC, but had a tough time getting any bites jigging. The bird play was very fickle and didn't last long in any one place. After losing a 30" fish at the boat and boating a short, we went on the troll. With only one rod out, that rod goes down and feels very heavy as we see a fish rolling behind the boat. At first we thought we foul hooked something, but 5 minutes later we put the net around a FAT 42"/30lb bass.

We set the lines back out and had a slow pick of shorts for the morning before heading south on a good tip. Running south in the snow (less than 1/4mile visibility), we found more fish of TI in about 25' of water. We continued a slow but consistent pick of shorts with an occasional keeper all the while listening to Christmas music in the snow - What a blast!!

All up we ended the day with 12 shorts and 3 keepers at 42", 32" and 30". All of the keepers came on Stretch 25's and 30's with shad rigs only picking up shorts. For us, we had to have the lures practically dragging the bottom. Lot's of good company on the water as well!!!

Nice work Bruce.
What color Stretch's were working for you?
I do best on redheads - so far anyway....

By far the best color yesterday was chartreuse. We kept a 4 rod spread of two Stretch's (25's and/or 30's), a shad rig and a large Clarke spoon. 50% of the fish were caught on the same chartreuse Stretch 25 including the 42" and 30". I was a little surprised as the water was very clear and the primary bait we found were peanut bunker?

I was next to you in the green regulator. We went on the troll about 5 mins after you announced your 42'er . NICE FISH

We ran up to 14th street and killed em. Limited out in an hour, BUT THEY WERE ALL 30" . I want a big one!!!!

Im going back out in a few hours to try for that fatty

NICE!! We are hoping to do the same on Saturday. Are you running any lead in front of the stretches or spoons? Did you have those bites straight out of the inlet? Or north or south? I seen some decent birdplays right off Sea Isle last Saturday tight to the beach.

kabrtler - glad you got into them good! We never got into a real good bite, just one here and one there. The bait was so thick, I knew there had to a blitz going on somewhere.

Mako - no lead needed today as we never strayed beyond 25' to 28' of water and spent a lot of time less than 20'. We went south out of GE and ended up about 15miles south, but there were fish all along.
