After reading report after report of giant stripers down in Virginia beach, it was time to go. Formed a crew and chartered Capt Timmy and Capt Paul of the Clean Sweep. They moved their 38' Fountain down to Virginia in December and they were ready to fish! We watched the forecast as the trip approached and it looked like friday afternoon until sat afternoon would be our chance to catch some of these monster bass. Headed out of the inlet around 11:30 in search of bird play. It wasn't 20 minutes until we saw clouds and clouds of garnetts and gulls. Everyone was using something different from live bait to storm shads to metal. We had fish from 24" - 46" with most being in the 28"-37" range. At times, it was drop and reel fishing. We had multiple times when everyone on the boat was hooked up (all 8 of us). I tagged about 8 fish including the 46" momma that we sent free to produce more stripers. I could have tagged more but there were too many big fish to be caught:D :D :D I wanted to say thanks to Capt Timmy and Capt Paul as we had a blast catching all those fish. It was my best day of striper fishing ever, for both numbers and size of the fish. It was my dads personal best striper as well. On top of that all, I meet two new fishing buddies, Bert (cee beaver) and Jim (Harris) and had a blast fishing with my dad and my cousin. Topped off the night by having some beers and food at Big Sams near rudee inlet. We were nothing but smiles all night after being fortunate enough to have been part of this magnificant day of striper fishing. If you are thinking about heading down to virginia beach, GO!!!! The video of the birds will be up as soon as we find the correct cable to upload it but here are a few pics of the trip....enjoy

First, thanks to my cousin (Skmag357) and Uncle (Keyman) for organizing this trip to Virginia Beach.

Second, thanks to Captain Tim and Captain Paul of Clean Sweep Charters for putting us on some of the best quality striped bass I have ever seen. Captain Tim and Captain Paul worked hard to get us on quality fish and worked equally hard once we hooked up into them. There were multiple times when everyone on the boat was hooked up. Captain Tim and Captain Paul assisted the anglers seamlessly. I also came away with some invaluable tips from them regarding specialty knots, jigging techniques, and lure presentation. I added these to my fishing journal which includes Captain Kobe's (Bunkerhead Charters) chunking tips and Captain Skip's (Stalker Charters) bucktailing tips.

Finally, but definitely not least of all, I got to meet and fish with fellow Bass Barners Bert (cee beaver) and Jim (Harris). I had a great time fishing with you two. Anyone that fishes and\or charters with either of you will be all the better for it. Hopefully, we can all get together another time for some fishing. I personally would look forward to that.

I recorded a short video (about 5 minutes) that has the highlights of this trip, including the massive bird action and the tagging and releasing of the 46 inch, 42 pound striped bass. The video will be posted to the Barn as soon as I find the correct cable to upload it. In the interim, please enjoy the trip pictures on the original post link.

We really didn't lose any time while the US Coast Guard was on board conducting the safety inspection. Steve and I continued to fish while they were on board. Steve caught and I tagged and released a 27 inch fish right on front of the US Coast inspectors. We got talking to the inspectors while they were on board, and in turns out the guy in the photo on the right trained at the US Coast Guard base in Cape May, NJ.

No, it sure didn't! Captain Tim and Captain Paul are going to give those good ole Virginia boys who troll for striped bass a run for their money on light tackle.

i feel i need to share additioinal info regarding that trip.

first off, the aformentioned individual was fishing on the bow when the big one was weighed by Tim's boga. i saw 42lbs and i was standing right there.forgive me if i mistated the weight.

2. we made a collective decison based on tim's informatoin,
we all wanted to catch fish and keep fish but the agreement was catch/release/tag which we did. we would try inside the line after we caught some fish. the reports that tim got over his cell phone indicated the inside line fishing would be a bust. he also had info from the boat, doa, on what was happening. the trollers screwed up the schools as they were weaving their way through it,going in and out. it would have been on of those days where we didn't catch anything and had no bites.

At no time did i say all i wanted to do is catch and release. That is a blantant mis-statement. in fact it was never stated at any time by anyone on the charter. we all wanted meat first and we all wanted to jig and bucktail. the trip was never, never about trolling, bottom line. if we trolled inside, your right, we could almost guarantee meat. the other point is that the Captain knows a lot more about catching fish than you. we all wanted ;to fish, ie, but no trolling.

3. while we didn't weigh every fish, the weight estimation is way low, they were big fat fish.

4. in my opinion ,whether you are right or wrong, you don't flame a trip if you don't keep your financial commitments.

5. five people had a trip of a lifetime, all very experienced fisherman with many many trips under their belt, open boat and many many charters. one of the crew runs his own charter with a 500 ton ticket. and amazing enough, he was happy. Again the goal of this trip was to catch and keep fish. it didn't happen and all tim did was burn about 400 dollars in gas trying put fish in the cooler.

It should also be noted here that you consistently wanted to keep the fish that you caught even though you knew we were outside the line. i know that occured more than five times, each time you would bring back a fish to Paul or tim asking to keep it. i think that p....d you off.

6 all five of us were so disapppointed with the trips that we are booking three consective days with Tim and Paul in february.:eek::eek:

7. the reason the party was upset with you is that you stiffed us $$$ for the day that you did fish and then stuck us with your share for saturday. you committed to two days @ x amount of dollars.

bottom line, don' whine about not keeping fish outside the eez.

you should seriously consider apologizing to this board, the other five members of the charter, Capt tim and paul, and make things right {$$$} with the other five members of the charter.

thanks for looking

jay, the majority of the trolling boats were inside 3, however the CG told us the popped three trollers who were outside with illegal fish. the striper fishing continues according to the locals i spoke with until about mid march.

the ride from rudee inlet is quite short.

good luck if you go, you will have a great time.

Bert,

I was staying out of this post as I believed enough was said on the other
post and I did not want to disstract from Steve's post. Plus the moderators have said enough was said on the subject. If you wish,
I would gladly respond to each of your points. But, would do so
off line through email as suggested by the moderator.

One question though, did you fish Sat and did you catch anything Sat?

I think all of us know how special this trip was. I want to thank Captain Tim and Captain Paul for sharing some of there knowledge which made this trip a once in a life time experience. I do not think any of us ever saw such insane bird play. I stopped fishing and just watched in awe as the birds fell out of the sky. I know the trip was special to me watching my son ( SKMAG357) and nephew ( Degend1) on the bow with bent rods fighting the fish with grins ear to ear. I stopped and watched Steve hook up, fight the fish, lip and lift the striper, tag and release it to be caught again. It made me proud and he was even more excited to tag the big girl. Tim handed off a rod to me with a 40lb+ fish only to have me drop it when I stopped reeling to see the swirl on top! He gave me another chance on another set up and felt the fish drop the bait after bending the rod in half. I got one more chance on the same set up and ended up with my personal best striper at 42lbs. We fished with two other Bassbarners Bert and Jim who were great company and avid fishermen. We ended the day at Big Sam's with a good food and drink had by all. I know I won't fast forget this day on the water and just glad to have shared it with ones you love.

I am just curious..I fish out of OCMD all season and seaisle from time to time....If I am reading this post correctly the charter says they were C&R bass past the 3 mile limit and the charter knowingly was doing this....how is this different from me fishing at the bank or fenwick schoal....BTW I could care less...i live past 3 miles and strictly C&R....just curious of the rules....thanks

This trip sounds like fun but you guys were very fortunate with the Coasties because it is illegal to "fish for" legalese for target... striped bass in federal waters.... directly from the nmfs site http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/sfa/state_federal/Fish%20pages/StripedBass.htm

EEZ closed to all striped bass possession or FISHING. Atlantic Striped Bass may not be FISHED for, harvested, retained, or possessed in or from the EEZ........
