Neat assignment this morning for me...
I got to ride on the clients boat and teach him a few things, show him around the Flats and make suggestions for his own future fishing success. Brian loaded me up on his 25 Pursuit before daybreak and along with his bro-in-law we set out to explore the Susquehanna Flats.

We zipped at Sandy Point first thing. I should have been in the skinny water at dawn. We hit the Flats proper as the sun was just starting to get up higher in the sky and just caught the tail end of a topwater bite. Couple of swirls and a huge blow-up...and then... SLAM on the popper! Hooked up and sonofagun line snapped at leader connection. Lost not only the HUGE fish but a real nice Stillwater Smackit. The fish won that one.

We then ran around to a multitude of spots and depths. Brian had a little knot tying lesson, some navigating/geography, and a bit of technique as we looked around for feeding fish. Unfortunately we never did hit the motherload but atleast we got some pullage with the likes of this little guy:

We found clarity in spots up to 4+ feet. We also had some water temps at 60 degrees, though most places in the upper 50s. Very good fish catching conditions. Thanks Brian for a fun day. Weather was great, nice boat and a fairly decent day. I hope you now become a Flats expert and enjoy what the upper Chesapeake has to offer.

Ed, That sounds like an interesting trip. I guess you are now in need of another Smack-it and I know just where you can get them.;)

Ed,

Chris and I had a blast too and we both took alot away from spending the day with you. We spent the drive home figuring when to get back out.

Thanks again.

Hey guys, Capt Ed is a first class guy - definitely recommend him

It is great to see a guide offer that kind of service, I would think as a new boater it would help a great deal learning on your own boat!

Hey Capt. Ed do you think with these water temps the fish are starting to move to the rivers to ready for the spawn? If I remember 60 degrees is usually the magic number.

That is exactly where they are and why the flats bite is so slow.
Their minds are not on eating today.
