So I was looking around for a new off the shelf striper (casting) rod (vs. building a custom one) and I finally settled on a Lamiglas Tri-Flex Inshore (TFX 7030CT) 7' 15-30# line and 2-8oz lure. The rod will be paired wth a new Avet SX reel spooled with 50# spectra. I'll use this combo for chunking and livelining for stripers, drum, and maybe some small schoolie tuna action.
I was also considering the following rods:
Shimano Teramar Southeast
St. Croix Tidemaster
G.Lookis Pro Blue (semi considered the Bucara too)I chose the Lami based on the fact that the Tri-Flex inshore rods have a good rep and also because it seemed to handle a wider range of lure/rig weights.
First Impressions...
HEAVY...Wow this rod is a lot heavier than I was expecting. :( I unfortunately ordered it online vs. picking it out in person, so I really can't blame anyone but myself there. I've handled the Teramar and the Tidemaster and both are noticeably lighter than the lami.
The EVA foam butt cap is a nice touch and the mushroom shape/style is nice for when you've got a good size fish on.
Pairs very nicely with the Avet SX I bought for this combo. If the rod was a little lighter this would be a perfect combo.
The fit and finish is overall very nice.
What? No hook keeper? Huh? Seems like a $175 ($230 MSRP) rod should have a hook keeper!
The cork is nice, but nothing spectacular...the cork grips on the Teramar I bought my dad for X-mas had nicer cork and was a heck of a lot lighter.
I wish the front grip was about 2" longer.
I'm not sure if it's an issue with the reel or the rod's reel seat, but the reel clamp from the SX doesn't fully tighten down...it seems like the reel seat is too small/narrow for it to mate onto. (not a big deal)ANybody else have feedback on these rods? I'm not 100% sure if I'm going to keep the rod or not. For about $75 less the Teramar seems like a better deal, but maybe I need to actually fish with this rod to appreciate it...that's why I'm looking for feedback from others who've used this rod.

for that kind of money you can have a very nice custom rod built, they way YOU want it done, you know what you want get it made! And you can also have the hook keeper put on......

I looked around, but all the custom rods that looked comparable were in the $230-250 range vs. $175.

I have a simular set-up - Lamiglass Inshore Classic (IC) model 7' H (15#-30#) w/ Avet SX, which I also use for chunking stripers. I have no complaints. I also have the Lami IC 7' MH (12-25) paired with an SX that I use for jigging/live biat. The MH is lighter and is more of an all around set-up, which is probably what you were looking for (based on our post).
On a side note, I also have the Tidemaster MH paired with a Shimano Calcutta 400 that I primarily use in the back, although it does have the backbone to use in the D-Bay. A Tidemaster paired with an SX is also a nice setup. I put that together for my Dad and he loves it.
I hopes this helps.

for the extra $60-$70, treat yourself and have a rod that you will LOVE the rest of your fishing career. Life is too short...and this is a long term purchase that you can use virtually foreever.
plus, you can add your logo, name, whatever to it...would be fun to fish with a rod like that (your current rod already has some bad karma)

The TFX 7030CT is considered there Black Fish rod @ 2 to 6oz. Thats why its so stiff.
At the somerset show I took about half an hour at the Lamiglas booth. I liked the TFX rods. The lami rep showed me the TFX 7020C and the 7020S, he bend that rod almost in half, very impressed. I ended up ordering two spin rods, the TFX7020S and the TFX7030S.
For a casting rod. In my opinion, the TFX 7030C would have been a better fit for you.
(3/4 to 3oz, 15 to 30lb line) Lighter rod and not so stiff.
I ordered both spin rods from FS in Point. I have the TFX7020S with a Sustain 5000 and the TFX7030S with a Sustain 6000. After comparing the two rods, I think the 7020S would be plenty to handle all the inshore fish minus the tuna. I'll be picking up a TFX casting rod in a few weeks.
Best of luck with your set up.

Hey Doc - I know...I know. I wish I had the time right now, but between work being crazy and major home rennovations kicking into full swing I don't have enough time or space to build my own rod right now and I needed a casting rod for the Spring striper run. I literally didn't have any other casting rods to use at all since I lost those rods off the back of the truck last fall.

Hey Mike - Thanks for the great info/advice...I'm hoping to get down to the shore one of the next few weekends to hit the stripers and I'll have to checkout those other rods you mentioned...they sound like they're worth a try.

I have a rod built on a triflex blank by Capt Gutts from a few years back...
I went a little cheap and put a Penn 310 GTi on it..
I LOVE IT TO DEATH!!!
Great stick for anything from fluke to chunking striper to eeling rips to drum and even schoolie YFTs. Rod has surprising backbone and AMAZING feel.
It's my "go-to" pole and has outfished every other rod I own.
FWIW, CG put a hook keeper on mine.

Listening to the way you're already talking about that rod, you'll never be happy with it. You'll always be questioning it.
