This will be my first year having a boat up in Sandy Hook area. With having a 21 center console I wanted to kind of find places to beach the boat or drop anchor and just have a picnic on the beach or a nice dock/resaurant area to moor to for a hour or two. I have two sons 11 years old and 6 years old that I am not to worried about, but the wife is 4mos. pregnant and I think it would be good to know some spots to relax just in case of bathroom breaks or just to break it up a little if you know what I mean.

Spermaceti cove is a very popular spot. You have to get there early on some weekends as it can get filled up with boats.
Horseshoe cove is another good spot but it depends how the wind is blowing and your a bit more exposed to boat wakes from the channel heading to the hook.
Another spot is up in the Navisink and Shrewsbury river. Right where they split on the North side there is a cove that I have seen quite a few boats in there anchored. I have never stopped there but I hear it's a good time.
As for dock and dine there are a few.
Clam Hut
Wind and Sea
Bahrs/Mobys
Barnical Bills
The Key
Sally T's (I think they may have stopped allowing people to tie up there as
I belive somone got hurt and being Jersey they sued)
Blue Rock cafe
I'm sure there are more that I can't think of now.
Welcome to the area.
Raritan bay is a very fishy place;)

He was only kidding.
That beach is on the ocean and it is clearly marked by white markers keeping all the boat traffic out of the area.
I guess too many boats were pulling right up to the beach to get a look.
Why? I have no idea. Most of the people that go there shouldn't take their clothes off in their own home.

the seagull's nest is actually down beach closer to the south end of the hook. think it's area c or d?

Actually the rock wall goes from one side of the cove to the other. I have paddled through there a bunch and at dead low moon tide you can actaully see the rocks. As for getting in there keep an eye on your chart plotter there is what we call the back channel that has been there for 20 years or more and it ranges from 7-22ft in depth. Just dont go out of the channel as it can be a foot or two on either side

I nominate AirForce Cove in the Navesink as a good, protected anchorage. Take care getting in, though.

It is really nice in there and a great spot to hide from the wind.
I do have one concern about over there. The ladies in the group like to take their things and go on to the beach. Of course they want to have some adult beverages with them.
I have seen the "The Man" (Parks dept) drive down to the beach there. Are you allowed to have booze there?
I know in spermicetti cove nobody ever bothers you as long as you don't act like a jackass. What about Air Force Cove? Would they give you a hard time there?
I really don't care myself as I stay on the boat :D but I would hate to have to listen to the wife after she got arrested
