Hey, those cast netters taking what was it? 40 lbs of bunker? Yeah, God they'll wipe a bay out in no time flat.

Everybody and their brother knows about it now....ask someone 2-3 yrs ago about Great Kills......they'd say HUH....what's that...I'll Google it when I get home. Hopefully the bunker moved out front. :D

Was there this morning.
Just because the bait is not on top does not mean it is not there.
Do you have a fish finder ? If you do the giant blobs all over the bottom in Great Kills, that would be the lack of bunker you speak of.

Was at GK 6:30 AM.
There were about 20 boats. It took a little longer with the cast net,(due to the boats pushing down the bunker, but got all I needed. Had to wait for the so called owner of GK Sal Cursi to clear out, after he cursed everybody for daring to get bait in his area. He is an old pain in the ass.
Anyway, get a Fishfinder and cast net, you will get all you need.

I just got back for GK...bunker were virtually impossible to get tonight...most boats that i saw had none and spent hours trying to capture a dozen or two....they must have been hit hard today
Wow this is gonna be a good one!!! Father in law was out today, mentioned the same thing. No BAIT in the harbor. But he did mention he marked them. The sharpies will rodeo them up though.
THose cast netters selling to the tackle shops are putting a major hurting on them for sure.
Its gonna be a short spring run if those bunks are gone.

What worries me is the lack of bunker in the bay. By now the schools should be balled up in the channels. If sal is in GK them that means there is no bunker in the back. I though the commercial bunker fishing is prohibited in NY. Also only one net is allowed on the boat in NY. So tell me why, there are two guys both throwing nets in one boat selling bunker commercially.
By the way, there is no bunker in the river and none in nj

Doesn't anyone remember the Nor'Easter that blew thru Monday? it is going to take a couple days for the bait, fish and everything to get into a pattern again.
If anyone is worrying about a cast net catching too many bunker you have more serious problems than lack of bunker.
Since the reduction boats have been kicked out of NJ waters there is a definate comeback. I believe the NY rules are even much tougher. Still even just the NJ bait boats take more in one haul of a purse seine than twenty cast netters could take in a year.

I was there around 11am on Wednesday. It took about an hour to get 6 bunker. There were lots of boats hunting them. They kept driving over them????? on their way to another splash. By the way I snag and don't net. Maybe with a net it would have been better.

Hard to find them during the day with too many boats sounding them to the bottom. You have to wait until it's all quiet. Bunker will then come back up to the surface.

I would like comment to the response of Capt. Sal being a bit crabby in GK. As a personal friend and long time customer, I have witnessed more than one of his rants in GK. On occasion, I have actually had to go to church and have my ears rinsed with holy water just to undo what I have heard.
That being said, if you hang back and watch his technique, you realize that he needs a little room to manuver a 30' boat in there. He gets the right marks on the fish finder, throws the net, then quickly circles the net driving the bait to the center of the net. Two good throws usually equals 150 - 200 lbs of bunker. All I am saying is give him the room, and he is in & out in 5 mins. A little cooperation goes a long way, and everybody gets the their bait quicker and out on the fish sooner. There is a reason why whenever he gives a seminar on cast netting bunker it is standing room only.
You just explained the in famous rodeo technique.
It wont work un less you have the correct cast net.
Too many people using a small net that wont sink. They wasted their money and its spooking what little remains of the Moss Bunk!!!

I was there on Wed. and if everyone would stop driving around like nuts the bunker may stay on top instead of being skattered all over the harbor! we had 9 bunker in 2 hrs of snagging were as on sunday I snagged 25 in 40 minutes!

B-unit, if you cast some trebles in the other boats direction you become one of those A-holes!
