View Full Version : Netting bunker with a small trawl net??
Last couple of times I was out I was two guys in a small, 24' boat laying a net that was maybe 100' with floats to catch bunker. They were doing this right off the beach in the schools. Not messing with pods people were fishing or anything. Anybody know the rules about this? I would imagine that it was for the bait shops, but I thought there was no netting inside three miles. I gave fish and game a call but everyone was in the field yesterday and I couldn't get an answer.

tHere is a permit that allows it. Did the guys have the permit? The way to find out is call Lt Mark Canale at 609-748-2050 with the boats reg numbers.

Wrong!!! gill nets are not illegal if properly licensed. There are a few licensed bait netters in the LBI area.don't worry they are legal.
Thanks barrel. They were netting them right off the beach so if they don't have a permit they have brass balls. Next time I see them, I'll give Mark a call to be certain, but I really doubt they are doing it without the permit.

Kurt, it is good to hear you are out there fishing , and keeping an eye on things. I think a deputy position is in order. :D
John...these guys have nothing on you....they could lift the out of the water by themselves:D :D

A properly licensed fisherman with a valid NJ Gillnet License can catch bunker.
There is also a legal gillnet fishery within three miles for other various species.
It is not illegal for a licensed gillnetter to set from the beach to three miles in state waters. They can also set beyond the three miles with the proper permits
