We got out a bit late - broke the inlet at 630 pm. Ocean was great
1/2 mile from the inlet pod with busting fish and a 35-40 ft sportfisherman hooked up. first cast - first bunker - first 30 seconds we hooked up to a 20 plus lb fish.
Probably 75 boats spread out all over from Squand to Belmar working pods. Not a ot bite but scattered fish. We saw 7-8 fish hooked up or landed (all gaffed and saw none thrown back).
Ended up catching only one with one lost after about 10 mins and another big fish that broke off on 12 lb test (again! - have to change that line to some 30 braid or new 17 lb mono)
We had some boiling fish at times. All three fish we hooked we were alone away form the boats again. Three times we had a good pod - once while hooked up to the fish that broke off and boats zoomed around - and even cut through the middle of the school.
The vast majority of guys were going slow and being patient, but darn there was some jackass with twin Yam 4S's and a guy with triple motors flying around and each time the fish sounded and scattered... I dont get it. The guy that came flying up we waved trying to indicate fish were there and he had to see us fighting one but he came right through... then stopped and we both had no more bites...
After dark everybody was gone and we tried looking foro schools, rode up to asbury in and off the beach from 40-70 ft and saw only scattered tiny pods on the machine. Where do those schools go after dark??????????
What a great week. I hope they stick around.
Congrats to Jackson Ian on his first good Bass (25 plus lbs) - talked to him at the dirt ramp...

I feel your pain man...it only takes a few stunods to ruin it for everybody...we stayed away from that mess down there....we prob caught less fish...but had less aggravation. I saw the guy with trips flying around inshore. The bunker are there after dark. I NEVER saw that many boats in the PM....maybe we should stop talking about the bass/bunker & say we caught a whole lotta of nothing...go to Barnegate! :D

Dave,
We were in there too. It was crazy! We saw a couple of releases but most fish gaffed....
We were out as well...just north of squan inlet. Heck of a site out there with all those slobs busting on bunker up top. We (six of us) took 4 fish (including my personal best...approx 35 lbs), released 4, and lost about the same.
As usual, there was one major A-HOLE who clearly saw one of our guys fighting a fish, but proceeded to run about 20 yards off our stern and over the line (power pro) even though we were yelling and waiving him off. We obviously lost the fish and a good amount of line. If you're reading this you POS scumbag, just remember, what goes around comes around!
Other than that it was a beautiful night!

Been in that situation before, so annoying! Makes you want to follow these people back to the dock sometimes but it just isn't worth it. Or maybe it is.

I was also there off Manasquan beach yesterday afternoon from 2:30 to 5. The couple of boats that were around me were very courteous and did not act like A-holes.
I had a small bunker pod all to myself for a while. Snagged several bunker and fished two rods. Kept one livley one on a weighed single hook rig on the bottom, and kept one "just snagged" bunker on the weighed treble he was snagged on.
Caught and released several nice stripers, and had a few other run-offs that did not hook-up.
I was looking for a "small" 28" to 30" fish to keep for the table, but had to kill one striper who maxed out my 30# capacity boga grip and taped out at 41" and a fat 24" girth. He took the weighted treble so deep in his throat that it was impossible to remove it. I've got scars all over my hand now that I got while trying to remove that hook from the "sandpaper" insides of his mouth.
Tomorrow night the wife is making her fantastic "crab cakes" recipe using the (I've got to steam some for her today) cooked striper meat intead of crab meat....YUM!

Great idea...is that the Bass Barn Striper Cake recipe...I'll have to give it a go tonight, I have plenty of bass.
The majority of the guys fishing the bunker are courteous...it's just the small few that get your blood boiling.
My 9 year old son was fighting a 35-40 pounder on 15 pound test the other night, when some dude in a small blue scout (there was a bigger blue scout that was fine) gets all excited and decides he needs some of our action. He ran over and parked his boat between us and our fish, even after I pointed out what was going on. We weren't even near a pod:mad: Had a couple more problems with the same guy later on
Other than that, everyone was working well together. The occasional tangle is inevitable, handle it with a smile and everyone can get back to the fun. But please, keep your bunker reasonably near your boat. I don't understand the need some guys have to let them out 50 yards when the boats are 20 apart, especially if you are using braid:confused:

we kept one fish Tuesday Night that was in the low 20 lb class that seem to be the avg and it was much more oily and darker flesh than the clam fish we typically catch in Sandy Hook.... those spring clam fish from shorts to lo teen class fish have really white flesh and are not at all oily...

This is not the Bass Barn version, I think this is simpler, easier and even better tasting.
Actually, my Wife heard about this recipe while watching "Oprah" a white ago and has made it for us several times since then...it's a recipe created by Robert Duval's Mother...you know, Robert Duvall...aka "Tom Hagen"...and served at Robert Duvall's resturant.
Try it, "It's an offer you can't refuse"
It's great with crab meat, and EVEN BETTER with Striper meat.
Fillet your fish as usual, trim away all the red meat and cut the clean white meat into chunks.
Steam the chunks until they flake easily with a fork, then refrigerate the cooked meat before following the recipe as you see it here, just substitute the Striper for the crab:

Yep, waved as I saw you guys heading north along the beach. We have been "neighbors" for years in the Glimmer Glass, I'm over on the other side by the end of the one way street traffic.
That American Mustang is a sweet ride and even better now with the new Etec's I bet...
