My father and I took the long ride down to Belmar from Raritan Bay and it was worth the trip. Bunker all over but only bluefish on them. Finally we saw the water errupting and we ran over. There were about 20 boats and one yahoo with his girlfriend that would chase the school as full throttle and run righ into the middle then cast. He as hooking up constantly but would force the fish to sound. We managed to boat three regardless of the mayhem. Two were 28lbs and one at 22-23lbs. We broke one off and I had another pickup but the hook didnt set. The circle hook got fould in the bait and when the bass started to run and I locked up the fish broke off.
It was great to just watch them feed. The bass were slapping the bunker with their tail, blowing them clear out of the water then eating them. At first I thought they were dolphin when I saw the bunker flying out of the water.
The good news is my father got his first bass over 20lbs, at 73 years old he was excited with that. I have yet to break the 30lb mark but have nothing to complain about.
If the boats would have worked better together we could have caught them all night. As it was they sounded after less than an hour and we never saw them come back up so we decided to head for the barn. Good thing we did, there was a lot of debris in the water from about Asbury to Deal. Logs, branches, dead animals, etc... Then up near Seabright there were large algee blooms. Bluefish were blitzing up near the hool and we caught a few more.
All in all we got about 6 bluefish in the 12-14lb range fishing the bunker pods. We had a shark chase one bluefish to the boat. We caught three bass and dropped 2 and caught some smaller blues near the hook before heading in. It was a long haul in a 20' boat... I miss my 25' Pursuit. :) At least until we fill up with fuel!
