I have 11 days off from work at the end of August. I was wondering if it would be worth the trip to run up to Montauk. I know it is kind of early to be asking how the action will be up there at that time, but I'm sure some of you guys keep logs from past years. Thanks for any info.

Two years ago Montauk was hot in the beginning of Sept.
Last year I went up 3 times in Sept and early Oct, little to no fish
caught.
The came through strong on the second half of Oct.

A good place for Aug and early Sept is up Cape Cod, the Cape Cod
Canal, Rhode Island shore line is a great place to see large bass
within casting distance on a consistent basis.

Are you planning to fish by boat or shore?

By shore. I'm looking to toss plugs and bucktails, pretty much the same as I do here. Rhode Island sounds like a plan to me. How about Block Island? Or do you think they are hugging close to the shoreline on the mainland such as Narragansett?

From shore, I would do Rhode Island, and Cape Cod Canal.
I believe the good point from shore on Rhode Island is Watch Hill.

On the Canal, they toss 5 oz bucktails, need to be able to toss
120-150 yds to reach the deeper water for the bigger fish.
I was only tossing 60 yds last year, could not reach, guys around me
were doing 150, catching 30-40 lbers, came home, read some books
practiced, and was doing 120.

I was also tossing big yellow pencil poppers and swimmers for the
bass which were closer.

The have a yearly picnic for fisherman around the first week of Sept,
friend went last year and learned alot of where to fish and made
some good contacts.

I am sure you can find some web sites which talk about this.

I would wait until late September or October for Rhode Island. Been heading up to Charlestown, RI for the last couple of years. Last year we fished the last week of September - plenty of bluefish, only a couple of bass. Prior year we were there the first week of October - still plenty of bluefish and a lot more bass. This year I am targeting the second week of October. Here is a good link for fishing reports in MA, RI & CT. http://www.fishingcapecod.com/

Now that's what I want to hear......I am checking local sites from Montauk to Rhode Island and keeping track of what's going on. The bass have to be somewhere come late August. Whereever they are, that's where I'll be going. Thank you to everyone for all the information.

Head out to the inlet and get on the jetties... wear cleats and have at it. They have been hitting the stripers there for a couple weeks, but there are a lot of blues... Montauk has been hit or miss from the beach, but there may be an update.

If you want to charter a great captain, check out Keith Hunt out of Star Island Marina- his boat, "Blue Water", is top notch and he's a solid guy and an awesome fisherman.

If you are going up to New England, check out my post from last year... ahhhhh, what a great trip.

It will be too early and VERY hit or miss in late August. As the others said, keep going north. The flukin up there is excellent and you may get into some fish if you go out at night on a party boat, but other than that, from the surf it will be pretty tough. You can always check the fishing reports from NY at this site

http://www.noreast.com/postedreports/list.cfm?region_ID=33

That will give you a good idea what is going on up and down the island.

I was in Westhamton Beach this weekend visiting in-laws. Never fished there before. Surf fished Sat evening to dark, 3 Stripers, 1 just legal. Next day fished the surf again, 2 short stripers & 2 short fluke all on Clam & 7/0 hooks. Lots of doggies. It was FUN.
