Go ahead and scream the BS at me - I certainly don't care.

(Seeing your sentence makes no sense, I'll postualte that you meant if it's weighed and not a world record, it should be let go.)
I will repond dude. What TOTAL BS, yeah you'd let go....
It was/IS the all time NY State record, and HOW close to the world record?? Laying in the net or on the deck could you tell the difference inbetween 75.4 and 78.8???? If so you have great experience dealing with 50 and 60 pound stripers! I could NOT TELL THE DIFF
I'd bet if al mcreynolds was on board to witness, he'd be sweating as the fish headed to the scale.

Oh brother... under current regulations the bass population has bounced back and is very strong. The fish was taken abiding by the states regulations. Part of the sport and heritage of recreational fishing is landing the biggest fish. Congrats to the angler on his fish of a lifetime...

It's not that they do not want to share their information,
they get tired of being judged

This is a world class fish and not for nothing, not too many people would let it go. I would show it on this board just to piss off all the jealous A$# holes

Honestly I don't have an opinion on this either way, to each their own as to what they keep legally, but I find it ironic, when the gov say its ok to keep fish there is no questioning whether or not its healthy for the species, hey it must be ok if the gov says so plus its legal, BUT as soon as the gov wants to limit a fishery, everyone screams they have no idea what they are talking about and have their heads up their axxes.
Did anyone stop to think that just because its legal, it still may not be good for the fishery? People trust the same governing bodies for striper regs that they so heatedly challenge on the summer flounder issue. Just saying.
And obviously you would keep a record or near record fish without questions.

More honestly -- A few anglers keeping a few 'BIG" stripers really wont change the overall picture of the population. A lot of anglers let really big ones go - SO the main thing is to keep them from being caught commercialy and more enforcement to stop 'poachers'. More and more stripers around each (different areas) - and a lot of confirmed 'sightings' by commercial boats 20 miles out seeing and reading huge schools of stripers every fall for last 10 years. These MAIN bodies used to migrate closer to shore (1-2 miles out years ago when we had 'good' shots at them). Even with this farther offshore migration we are still seeing a lot more stripers today compared to a few years ago !

Wow. That thing is MASSIVE! I couldnt even imagine. Looks like a St. Croix rod and Penn reel, nice setup! Also looks like he needs a bigger boga grip. The one he has probably bottoms out at 15 or 30 lbs. Not even close to what he needed with a fish like that . :)
Whoever said that scale needs to be recertified is crazy. THat fish is huge! Sometimes the angle of the pic or position of the fish throws you off. Al Mc Reynolds stood behind his fish. This guys is next too his.

Ok, all kidding aside, this fish is so close to record size, it leaves speculation:
1. Another year - would the fish be bigger, or had it " max'd" out, and near death.
2. Was it swimming with a pod of other giant size Stripers, perhaps one bigger with it.
3. I really would have kept it IF I thought it was a world record.
So, wow, that's some fish.......now let it go .

As for keeping this fish, somebody would have to been a fool not to keep it. There would have been no way to know on the boat if it was 75 or 80 lbs. Even if you had a scale that went the high, would you trust it with only a three pound margin?
When Al's fish record falls, the next fish with be worth probably 1M+. And anybody who said that they would rather release that cow, then kill her and give up the money, is full of it.

Basics-- 6 to 1 ratio on line strength. 20 lb test can handle up to 120 lbs IN THE WATER. With proper drag setting should be NO PROBLEM with a fish that size as long she stays in the water until she's netted. Even 14 lb test mono could handle that if you know how to set your drag right--Just might take a while to bring her home!

If you want to complain about something try complaing about all the guys targeting bluefin for catch and release, there is actually a problem with bluefin numbers, think about it you get a charter boat who kills the first legal fish, no problem there, but then they continue to mollest alot more fish needlessly, why not go catch brown sharks if just looking for a fight.... how many of those bluefin actually die from the fight???? circle hooks or not:o

That is a dream fish. I would crap my pants.
As for him keeping the GIANT fish, that is completely up to him. All I’ll say on this is I would bet money that fish would be dead very shortly after he let it go. Fish go through lots of stress being caught. I highly doubt that slob ran right to the boat and jumped in. He would have to play the hell out of that fish with that little setup up just to get him to the boat.
If I wore a hat it would be off to him. GREAT JOB!
