Lots of good kayak info on the barn.
Check out the Home Port.
There is a thread dedicated to kayak fishing.
2 Barn sponsors that sell kayaks include Barrell and Sterling Harbor.
You need to figure out what is good for your body size, budget, type of striper fishing you do and where you do it. Once you focus on what you need, you will only have a couple models and manufacturers to choose from.

I had all of the same questions. For me, a Hobie was the only way to go. Not to knock the paddle type of yaks, but I fish way to often and cover way to much ground to want to paddle. If you plan to fish in bumpy or windy conditions, go Hobie, PERIOD. For lakes and cruising around maybe a paddle yak. I like the Hobie Revo for windy and bumpy though I bought the Hobie Outback as it is a fishing machine.
During my test ride I was told to bring a rod and go. 10 minutes in and I was on the sleigh ride (you'll see) with a 26 inch striper. An hour later I placed my order. (wife and I worked it out. A convection oven my butt) Anyhow, stop in to see Cathy at Sterling Harbor Marina. Personally, I feel loyal to them as they spent soo much time with me as I knew nothing about fishing from a kayak. Since my purchase, Cathy has helped me trick it out the way I like.

I'd be glad to help out as well,

John at the Barrel will let you test drive any yak you want for as long as you want with no pressure to buy. He will also "pimp your ride" for you at a very nominal expense. I bought my Hobie from him 2 years ago and I love it. Will also back it up 100% after the purchase and take to fishing hot spots to fish. Good luck with your yak, either place you buy it you will love it.

I bought a Hobie Outback earlier this year from John (Barrell) and love it. It was a bit scary at first but was soon replaced with relaxation. Awesome feeling being out there in a yak, especially at night.

catching fish on the kayak is definately the best. Go to STERLING HARBOR in wildwood and see Cathy and George, you can test drive them right there and they have a great tackle shop, not to mention they are the nicest people and would go out of there way to help you.

I bought my Hobie Mirage Outback kayak from Barrell in July 2005. You can fish from other kayaks but, the Hobie Outback was designed for fishing. With the Mirage drive you can hold steady in a current while casting lures into sod banks or near bridges. The Mirage drive is more powerfull in currents than a strong paddlier. The Outback is rated tops in stability and seat comfort against other kayaks. I have never had a wet rear sitting in my Outback. It's easy to complete a 10 mile loop fishing from the Outback either day or night. Barrell is the best when it comes to kayak fishing! www.rbbsurf.com (http://www.rbbsurf.com)

Kayaking is fun, just did it for the first time this past weekend, and plan to do it again this weekend since the boat is still in the shop :( .

Get a hobie... I use it primarily for freshwater, but also hit the back bays for bass and flounder. Go to John at the Barrell as others have recommended.

Another vote for John at barrell. I think that guy was born in a kayak.:D He'll answer all your questions and after he figures out what you will use it for, he'll set you up in something that will work best. He'll let ya test paddle it, and has infinite patience for newbies (almost infinite?):D
Mirage drive runs circles around any manual paddling, and will make an extreme difference if you ever fish in current.
good luck

I just got my outback from Barrell two weeks ago and have already caught well over 100 fish of all different kinds on it in creeks, lakes, and back bays. Still haven't caught anything worth killing yet, but come close with stripers a few times. Definitely the best way to hit a bridge. You can work right along the shadow line and the fish just don't care that you're there. Loads of fun when you hook up with a decent fish too.
Can't wait for fall to arrive.

I just bought the 09 hobie outback sweet rig. This is my second hobie and I have an old town. 09 hobie outback is going to set you back approx. 1400 and change but you get what you pay for. You can't put a price on fun and relaxation. Best of luck in finding a yak that is right for you. As stated above great bunch of hardcore yakers here. IMHO Go with the brightest color kayak you can find. Help the boaters see you easier due to low profile to water. Best.

w-m-y-h. You have your emails blocked. You can come down to Brigantine and we can do a demo on the water. Call first. We are getting low. I have two revo's left and only about 6 Outbacks. That was from a 52 foot container truck full to the back doors. Ive sold many to Mullica Hill crowd.
