Started fluking late. fished south end and had 4 fluke with three about 17 inches, but one good one about 22-23 inches. Biggest SeaBass I've seen on inshore reef 4-5 lbs with a giant mouth. When we filleted him he was thin near the back and had a tough opaque flesh. Not too much doing so fished opted to try the Mohawk out on Manasquan ridge and power drifted it catching about 14-15 keeper SeaBass with many throwbacks. There was a pod of bunker at the ridge and a fin in with them. WE had a 60 lb TLD 30 on the boat but no leader so we cut off a 100 lb leader Cedar plug and tied a big circle hook to it trying for a mouth hookup. We tried to bait it with three squid but he would not take it. About 10 minutes after we had the fish come up and out of the water about 75 yards away near the bunker. My guess is we were there for the end of a bunkers life. We never did hook up or see the fish close up, but the fin looked like a juvenile Mako maybe 4 ft long. Definately not a whiptail. Strangely enough, the water was a smoking hot 75 degrees at the surface. Ran into my dive buddy coming in and he said it was 58 on the bottom where he was spearing some ling...
What a gorgeous day.... even it it is the August Doldrums...
