Hey guys.
I have a 15 gallon tank on my boat and I am docked in Tottenville. Raritan Bay has been bad(For me atleast) this season but it seems the Hook has been great. Will my tank be able to go there and back?

A little info about boat and motor might be helpful.

you can always go and when you get down to your 3 gallons pull into atlantic highlands for fuel ,i ran a 18 foot tryhull with a old johnson 135 and it took 10 gallons from perthamboy to the amo pier and back ,make sure you have tow boat the best 100 dollars you can ever spend

I run a 17 ft center console up there all the time. 60 hp Yami with a 20 gal tank. I put in at Leonardo and run to the hook, the rocks, back to Horseshoe cove over to Roamers light, back to the hook, out to false hook, out two or three miles to see what's going on out there and back into the bay. I've spent 19 straight hours fishing up there more than once and allways come back with fuel. Maybe not much but still had gas in the tank. As was mentioned, you can always duck back into Highlands and fill up. As you gain experiance with your vessel you'll know how much she consumes.

I used to run my 16 Duranautic w/ 40 horse Mariner from Keyport to the hook fairly often back in 1983, and only carried a 6 and a 3 gal tank. Came back with a couple gals all the time. Rough ride in tin with wind against tide, though.
Guy at the gas dock would laugh when I would fill the 3 gal up, and ask if I was running the canyon that day. I got the last laugh as I actually traded up 3 years later and DID run the canyon from there. He had to pump 155 gals for those trips, and always reminded me of my spare 3.

follow the 1/3 rule
1/3 out ,1/3 in , 1/3 for fishing

Should be enough , I ran a 18 mirrorcraft 70hp yam. I kept 3 six gal. tanks, from atlantic highlands ramp, to the hook a little running around six gal. got me back with gas to spare. the other tanks are there for the 1/3 rule

I always thought that 1/3 rule was 1/3 out 1/3 in and the other 1/3 was to spare for rough weather or unforseen circumstances. :huh:If you use 1/3 for fishing you may not get back to the dock.
