This summer I bought an Ocean kayak Scrambler 11. Is it worth trying to outfit? I have been crabbing and tried fishing off of it. The fishing proves difficult without the rod holders and such. Is it to small? However there is no chance in me upgrading to a different kayak. Any recommendations?

You say you have been fishing and crabbing for a while in the yak so you should have a good idea of where you would like a rodholder. Scotty makes a bunch of different style rod holders that work well on kayaks. I use the flush mount so its out of the way when I don't want the rodholder installed. I also use a milk crate that I mounted (2) angled rod holders in.

I have an Ocean Kayak Caper which is 11ft. So far I have a rod holder that sits between my legs. It's a cheapo one that is raised. I'm planning on replacing it with a flush mount. I cut down a milk crate and it fits perfectly in the rear tankwell perfectly. The milk crate has two homemade PVC pipe rod holders. It's my lil fishing machine that I just love.

Check out the Kayak Fishing Stuff website for ideas. Their bulletin board has a dedicated Ocean Kayak thread. The scrambler's been around for years and guys have been fishin' just fine from 'em.

I am thinking about drilling into my kayak. Maybe putting some rod holders in. Is it worth doing it myself or should i have it done professionally?

Hey Bullseye.....reading on the "Do it Yourself" section on Kayak Fishing Stuff's website might help you into getting it done yourself.... they have pics. Others here might talk you through it as well!

Good luck out there...keep us posted!!!

yes and no, i got a scrambler 11 earlier this year, i also purchased the scotty mount on top rod holders, and the ones you set through a hole which you drill, make sure it is the right size and you caulk it with silicone, a also have a mounting system for a net, bait bucket, and fish bag for when i did catch fish. i also have crabbed with it in the mullica river off hay rd, galloway township that was actually quite easy to retrieve traps, but needed to modify a crab net by cutting it down, i have fished with it good no fish larger than 17'' but i am currently looking to invest in another kayak that actually can get out of its own way, i started kayaking in the prions 3 diffrent types and stytles, when i started in the ocean i was comfortable that it wouldnt sink and if i fell out could get back on, but if you truly like the scrambler 11 go to outdoorplay.com, scotty setups, cratemate, jr. all pretty cheep....

I fished for 3 years from a Ocean Kayak Yak Board, which is all of 7 feet. Not the best, but any yak can be rigged for fishing.

Jennifer, do you have the hatch in the front of your scrambler? If so, how do you like it? Does it give you that much more room then you had before?
