What do you guys use for rod leashes? I saw a guy who used those trade show lanyards. (You know, they go around your neck & hold ID badges)

I just use a thin black rope maybe 1/8 inch. Scotty clip at one end and a taunt line hitch around the rod handle.

I wish I used a leash. Over the summer I was on the yak using a nice baitcasting outfit. I don't know how it happend, but I made a cast and it flew right out of my hands into the water. I think my hands were wet from paddling. A leash would have saved my outfit from being lost.

Now, do you just leave your rods leashed to paddle & troll, of do you keep them connected while you're fighting a fish?

Use an inexpensive set up and carry 2 rods...in case you lose one. I don't use a leash but I have also been fortunate not to lose a rod yet.

Have you ever seen someone use a rod leash on a center console, dual console, canoe, garvey, etc..? Why would you use one in a kayak? Most fishermen are seated while fishing from their kayak. Seated is the most stable position. Much better than standing in a boat. I have seen many fishermen go overboard from a rocking boat. My uncle lost 3 rigs that were pulled from his grip by a striking fish after falling asleep on his 22 footer.

I fished from an ocean kayak recently and damn near knocked my rod into the water several times juggling the paddle and rod. Its a pain to handle since Id never fished that way before.

Could use a small dog leash... might work ohk.

I fished out of a paddle yak for ten years before the Hobie foot drive was invented. The best place to place your rod when paddling back up is between your legs. Just shove the butt under your crotch and point the rod tip straight forward toward the bow. You can paddle comfortably and the rod is secure.

just use some thin nylon cord, the good stuff you get at a climbing shop, with two small stainless caribiners. One goes on the boat, the other goes on the rod above the reel handle.

Thanks for that lil tidbit, Ill probably be using that technique next time I get into a yak. I really want to try the hobies though, they look like loads of fun.... :D

dont they make floatable things you could just attach to the rod or to the cork somewhere?

Cut some of those floating noodles you can get real cheep for kids to the length you want, slide over the handle and your good to go. Also use them for plyers, and anything else you want to float if you flip over.
