Crabbed the Elk River on Monday 9/28/08. Caught a bushel of nice crabs 6 1/2 to 8 inches in about 6-8 feet of water. Lots of sea grass in the shallows and you could see a lot of fish jumping around. Saw 2 Eagles also. Great day. Thought the post might be useful for any crabbers out there even though it's not a fishing report. Here is a pic.

That poor Lab looks frightened by the crabs.

I have a sneaking suspition you torture the dog with crabs.

We never did that to our Labs. Be ashamed of your self.

I was using traps. the tide didn't matter, which is unusual because we usually do better with an incoming. The water temp dropped 7 degrees this week and the crabs are moving out very quickly. They are not catching them hardly at all way up river where we were. The latest reports were some nice fat crabs near turkey point and they probably won't be there for long. I'm done crabbing for the year now and will be striper fishing on the Delaware river thursday.

My neighbot got out this past weekend on Sat & Sun, Had to work for them, 6 hours, but a Bushel on Sat and 1/2 on Sunday. But nice crabs. He doesn't leave the dock until 10:30 ish....
I was going to go out on Sunday but he gave me 20 7"+ ers:thumbsup:
Along with the Blue Fish we caught up there On Sunday, was great eating.

I checked my log from last year, this coming weekend was my last weekend crabbing on the lower Elk.
It really turned off the 2nd week in Oct.
For us anyway.

But this year was totally different then last year.
We killed them from Fathers day until this weekend last year on the lower Elk, this year they were late and never really turned on down here until the past few weekends, they were way up the Elk...

I like to chunk bunker at the yellow can, bullpen, or the south end of the Augustine jetty. I've done well trolling stretch 25's or other deep diving plugs by zig zagging accross the lower south end of the submerged section of the Augustine jetty. I have a 16 foot aluminum boat and don't draft much. watch your depth. You can pick up some nice schoolies that way.

Also... are they still catching bluefish off Turkey Point?

Thx, I have to follow you around out there some time, I live right up the road from Augustine Beach and have a summer place on the Elk where we do most of our fishing.

Yes the Blues were still there last weekend..we're going out Sat & Sun on the Elk and down toward Shad Battery.
