I really try not to go over 4 oz. I perfer 2-3 oz of lead. That usually is enough.

It realy depends on how hard the current is running and size bait you have at the end of the line. I start of with 5 oz and work my way up if need be when chunking stripers. I fish with 30lb mono but if you fish with braid then you can go down in weight.

The least amount it takes to hold the bait on the bottom is what they tell me.

I've needed 10-12 oz on strong tides sometimes, I carry lead from 1-16 oz on my boat. You can usually get away with 3-8 on most days, but I fish with large baits most of the time & it takes a little more to hold it down. I mostly fish the lower bay in 20-50 ft of water.
