How would the more expert fisherman use it? We usually just squirt some around the boat, but it does not seem super effective. My friend had the idea of getting sponges soaking them and putting them either off the boat or in the chum cage. Any thoughts?

Funny you bring this up. I am working on the same idea now. Thinking about attaching something to my anchor chain with bunker oil soaked sponges. Great minds think alike eh? Hey where ya docked in SH? I am along Sunset Drive near 109th. St.

I think I saw you heading up the intercoastal late sunday was that you?Beautiful boat if it was! I'm @ SH marina three spots in where the boatlift is. Look for a white ford edge with a bass barn sticker. Anchor chain.. that might work...good thought..

bunker oil in a gatorade bottle, the kind with the sport top. 3/4 full, tie a small rope on the bottom and hang off a cleat. Turn the nozzle open a crack and it just drips out slowly. I have also hooked up to anchor chain with clip, hard to get it adjusted right.

Thats the ticket for sharkin....nothing like the smell of bunker oil in the morning eh....we use it sharking, but honestly i cant stand the stuff...once you get it on your hands its there for the day....i guess it could be deployed deep with the use of sponges...but it is oil and going to end up on the surface anyway....probably down current from your position, depends on what your fishing for..when sharkin were on the drift so that rules out sponges on the anchor line...but its an interesting angle for chunkin bunker for stripers.....could possibly soak some sponges and put them in a weighted chum bag and send it down off the bow.

The milk seems to mix into the water a little better, the sports bottle the other poster brought up works well.

get a bath towel and soak it in a bucket with the oil over night. when you get ready to anchor just tie the towel to the anchor line just above the anchor. it will sent a steady stream of oil for hours.works, give it a try;) ~matt

west marine sells the dripper setup. i set it up to drip about every 5 seconds or so depending on speed of drift

We use enema bags. You can get them in multiple packs on ebay.

we also do this works well. It is pretty nasty to clean up off the boat, just thought I mention.:)

I fill a lawn sprayer similiar to an Ortho with bunker oil and connect to my raw water hose. At regular intervals I spray over the side of the boat. Prior to setting up for a troll I slow to troll speed and spray over the transome for a minute or so. While trolling I also spray at regular intervals.

If you spill it on the deck, you'll be slipping and sliding all day lone. I don't use it anymore for that reason. I did the rag thing tied to the anchor line and it does work well. In my case, it didn't seem to imporve the catching.

Not me. I was working last weekend unless someone else decided to take my boat for a ride. :)

Oh! Colors were very close. Thanks for the great input here keep it coming!
We mix it with oat meal & freeze it in quart containers. Drop the containers in a chum pot & lower as deep as you like.
As it melts, the oat meal sinks in the current.

pour it into a plastic bag or freezer bag. tie it off with heavy string to a cleat mid boat or further up then put a pin hole in bottom of bag with a hook or a pin. with the water being cold it makes the oil thicker . one bottle dumped in a bag will last all day.

Does it help when striper fishing? I know it can, and will, attract dogfish

I put it in a small pump spray bottle and spray it directly on my baits..I can t remember the name but there is a product in a spray can that works great, It costs me $9.99 a can and it definitely produces some stripers, Modells sells it in its reels case ( Locked). I use "Voodoo Oil" now it works but not as good as the spray can stuff did. I get it at "Reel Life b&T" in Point Pleasant, And when you use it on the boat either in a drip bottle or in chum bag hangging off the side it is a B**CH to clean up. Thats why I use the spray bottle.

I took one of those two gallon (i think it's two gallon) garden sprayers, the kind you can pump up. Then I cut th spayer wand off, and replaced it with an in line brass valve. One the other side of the valve, I put some of that clear plastic tubing, enough to go up over the gunwale and almost touch the water. We put the manhaden milk mixed with sea water in it and pump it up. You adjust the drip with the valve. Works perfectly, but boy did I get some wise cracks from the boys on the dock the first time I brought it down.
Don't ask me where to get the valves... one of my buddies is in the pump business, so he's got all kinds of goodies... I think he gets them from McMaster Car (sp?)
