Has anyone ever used a hand crank meat grinder to make their own chum from "old" bunker? I came a across one but the output holes seem a little small >1/8" < 1/4". Any ideas would be appreciated.

I bought one of those food processers from shoprite last year. Was on sale for like $20.00. Of course you can't grind off the side of your boat like you would with the hand grinder.

They are a pain in the butt, always getting clogged up with the bones and all, I find it better to just cut up as small as possible and use the chum king, that way you can leave the pot on the bottom for awile just drifting out the sent and then just pop it and wala chum on the bottom:thumbsup:

You can buy various "cutter" plates for most of the hand models....even the older ones....go online.
I have one left that's mounted to a picnic table with a 5-hole plate....works great but I slice (lengthwise) bunker & whatever bait's left.
I had one on the boat that was mounted on a cutting board mounted on a post that fit into a rod holder.....grind you chum as needed.
You may have a problem after drilling unless you cut the holes on an angle to aid in cutting.

Took the die to a machine shop and they added 3 - 1/2 holes...worked like a charm. I have a mesh chum pot with a lead bottom that holds about a nice log. Now have the chum stew in 16 oz cups in the "bait" freezer as I type. Just need to add stripers.
Thanks for the input...

your right those toilet partitions are good for alot of things I made up a fillet table for my friends dock. sometimes they mis measure and they come in too small or send an extra section. only they are a bit heavy

WE use the 1/4 inch holes, as long as your not weak you'll be okay;). We tzke it on the boat and grind up the old used bait into a bucket and scoop it over. Its nice to grind up clam for chum. YOu can make a larger handle for it to make it easier to turn. Or some have a wheel to attach a pulley and motor. Sometime it takes one person to turn it and another to hold the board down but it is worth it...

Bunker grind up pretty easily , especially if they are pre frozen.sometimes you gotta clear the skin and scales from the dies ...I got a nice grinder from a Hospital Thrift store, they had a couple of them with the Dies that can be changed to grind the bunker coarsely. It was a hand crank that I modified w/a Socket..and an electric Drill after I took off the handle so I could feed the bunker chunks more quickly The Best thing was the price $5.00 I bought the one with the least amount of wear. and the extra dies were 50 cents a piece I bought them all...there were 5 of them..
