Hey Everyone,

I currenty keep my boat in Port Norris NJ, I was thinking about moving the boat upto Deleware City Marina, can anyone tell me some of the following please:

How is the current and docking at the Marina ?

Do you spend more time fishing the Del Bay or Chesapeake from there ? How far do you need to run to get on the fish during summer and for the Fall Striper run.

Thanks in advance for any help, I run a 23 foot Hydra sports with twin 150's and have 140 gal gas capacity.

If fishing is what your after look else where,if you know the water the spring can be great at least for a couple weeks, after that no much but catfish and perch, then it's a long run to anywhere..

I asked this question a little while back in the Delaware Bay section and didnt get much response. My boat is on the upper chesapeake, bohemia river to be exact and it took about 40-45 minutes to get travel to D City by boat. We took a cruise and found the area interesting to look at, but very little boat traffic on Labor Day weekend???

On the way home I went through the D City canal and found a guy in a 28' walkaround w/ outriggers and asked him. He said that stripers can be found just outside the nav markers where the C&D canal meets the Delaware - "just look for moving water". I havent had a chance to go back since... I also noticed quite a few commercial fishing boats docked in the immediate area, but not sure if they fish locally or travel.

Fishing in the upper Chesapeake, from my experience so far, is an early to mid spring then October -December event for stipers. I know and hear of people pulling perch, catfish and some stripes all summer long; but the water temp this summer was in the 82-84 degree range. On Labor Day the Delaware water temp was 68.

Dont know if that is what you were looking for, but I wasnt able to find too much out either.

FWIW, it looks like the area has not been "explored" to the extent that some other areas have been.

The owners of the Del. City Marina have spent a lot of money fixing it up the last 2 yrs. Gotboost1 is right about the fishing. The spring striper run is excellent for a few weeks and thats about it. I have done very well a few hundred yards south of the C&D Reedy Point Canal enterence.. If your into big catfish you can load up out front of the Fort Delaware near the East Side where the shipping channel comes very close to the Island. The south end of the submerged Augustine Beach jetty will hold schoolie stripers that you can cast plugs to. If you are willing to burn through some gas you can head south to Ship John lighthouse and it takes about 45 minutes, but you always have to contend with the weather factor since it can get choppy real quick. I think the reason people don't see a lot of boat traffic in the summer is because there is really no place on the lower Delaware River to enjoy a day out in a boat other than to take a ride. The current is very fast, the water brown/green, and there are not any places to pull up to a nice cove or sandbar and swim or pull tubers/skiers, etc. The Chesapeake has a much nicer environment for those activities.

Back when I first moved to DE in 92, I had my boat In De City , we found ourselves after the first few trips on the DE always running across the canal to the Bohemia,Cabin John or Sassafrass.....

Hey Gofish, are those fish there now at the S end of the jetty? I've been concentrating over on the Elk on weekends, I have to get out after work from Augustine....while I stil have light.

Some nice Rock have been showing up in the Bohemia and in the North East at Red Point and the Boy Scout camp. The winning fish in our little local tournament last Saturday was a 30" Rock caught in the Bohemia.

striperin,
I went out of Augustine last friday but I never made more then a mile from the ramp in my little 16 footer because I got blown off the water. It was windy, cold, and I was taking a lot of spray, and I turned back. I was heading to the south side of the jetty to troll crankbaits and stretches. Unfortunately, I'm about done fishing for the year because Duck season opens in Delaware tomorrow and I'll be sitting in a blind:). I've only got so much time and it's tough making a decision to fish or hunt. LOL...
Glad to hear you guys are still doing well with sripers around Turkey Point. I would guess the snapper blues are gone now that the water temp dropped. They sure are fun.

i keep hearing about some nice sized stripers being caught on the bohemia - where, when? I am in Hacks Point and never see anyone fishing and little if anything on my FF.

Anyone care to share a little local intel? Even if you put me right on top of them, I probably still wouldn't catch anything

Double Trouble,
It's about 25-30 miles to make the run from Del. City to Ship John. I have a neighbor who had his 23 foot boat in Del. City Marina and would often make the run to ship John and it would take about 45 minutes. He said it was easier then trailering it but it would cost a bit more in fuel. You can catch trout and croaker off of Woodland beach, (just north of Ship John), and Stripers and blues at Ship John. I've caught a few nice stripers off of Ship John. You are going to have to go well south past Ship John to consistently catch flouner. Just a note.... I've caught my share of snapper blues in August to the Beginning of October right off of Augustine Beach though, and that is a very quick run from Del. City.

Finesser,

Are you the bartender from John's cafe that had a cannon shoved in his face one night? If you are , Shell says hello.

Hi Blackerty,

What is the name of the Marina on the Cohanssey ? What is the Marina like, is it well maintained ? The reason I want to leave Port norris is that it is not well kept, and also I wanted a shorter ride from PA.
