i was dragging a stretch 25 1 mile off the holgate for bass last friday when something other than a fish snagged the hook.i reeled in the stretch and found mono line . I removed the line from the hook and started to pull in the line when i felt something tugging on the line, pulled in about 20 yards and saw a 25" bass ...healthy looking so i released it. I started to retrieve the rest of the mono when to my surprise up came a loomis surf rod with a shimano calcutta gold series bait caster .looked good ,no rust or dirt..like it was just lost..i got on the vhf and asked if anyone lost a rod and reel to call me on my cell phone and describe to me what you lost,if it matched what i had ,they could have it back..5 minutes went by when the vhf radio called my boat name and a fellow fisherman named ed said he knew a friend that was fishing off the beach had lost his rod and pole earlier the same day, his name was rocky.rocky called me on my cell and sure enough it was his rig lost on the beach 1 mile away, some how that rod and reel and fish traveled over a mile out...i don't know is a 25" fish could pull it that far.anyway rocky met me in the evening and claimed this property. Rocky, thanks for the nice card and reward

Lucky him, I lost one of my rods recently..St. Coix tidemaster with a Diawa 1600. Went back to the spot where I left it and it was gone! On the way back to see if it was still there I thought if someone did see it they would just leave it...Yeah right:rolleyes:

Thats Great, how would you like this to happen.... I was at the CM reef last year with my wife flounder fishing, when a shate took my rod right out of my hand.. New Penn 965 on a St croix rod, $350++ set-up. I was all pissed off and was going to go back to the dock, now this is about 10 minuites after I lost it, my wife says "fish on" as I am holding the net waiting for her to crank in her fish, I see a gold thing coming up from the bottom, damm if she did not catch the rod & reel, and a 4 lbs fluke. I grab the rod and don't you know the skate was still on it...Let me tell you, I still have not stopped hearing it from her....

Shadow,

When I was a kid fishing beach haven inlet, we had a rod get pulled out of the rod holder one afternoon. The following weekend fishing the same area my dad snagged the rod. The fish was gone, but we got the rod back. I recall also pulling in a surf rod and big Penn spinning reel with my anchor from the Trenton area when I used to fish there for herring in the spring. We still have that rod and reel...

Too cool!

 Way to ask around and return it, a certain person would have just called it a great catch and used it next weekend.

Great story. Was fishing for weakies a few years back in the Delaware Bay and my hands were slimy from taking the fish off the hook (didn't wipe them good enough) and a fish hit hard and my outfit went into the drink. Penn levelwind baitcaster and an Ugly Stick. Didn't get it back.:(

nice story! i took my wife fishing about 9 years ago behind margate. we were fishing maybe an hour when she yells got one. well here i am net in hand at the ready when i see that her hook is hooked through a factory made loop of mono:eek: i reach down and grab it and pull the rest of the line in by hand ,at the end was a 5lb fluke with a green spinner type hook in it's mouth:confused: not our hook! anyway at the end of the day we are at the dock cleaning the fish we caught and i hear this guy talking about this big fluke he had to the boat and his line just broke at boat side. i made a joke and said you were'nt usein a green spinner hook were you? he turns around and say YES i was. i show him the fish with hook still in it's mouth and he said oh my god thats the fish!! holy grap my wife some how hooked this mans factor made loop five miles from where he lost the fish. i gave him the fish and he said "i never thought i'd see this fish again" funny what can happen out on the water ~matt

Good job. Good karma heading your way.

Last year out in the Delaware Bay, I was unhooking a fish, came up and hit one of my baitrunners in a rodholder with my elbow. Ploop! into the drink it went. Two hours later, we're changing baits, and one of the hooks comes up with yellow braid on it. After handlining for about 5 minutes, I got my rod back.:D Managed to get most of the line back onto it, too.

hey, if anyone who fishes the Delaware River around Linden Ave ever comes up with a blue Shimano reel and a 2 piece Indian/Mohawk freshwater rod(it is a spinning and fly combo with cork handles let me know, I lost this combo years ago on the Philly side near the Electric company area in the lilly pads. My father gave it to me(he is now deceased) years ago as a kid, it was passed down from my grandfather to him, and him to me........since were on the topic.

Nice job on making the call on the radio, and may your fall be filled with many bass.

Happened to me twice losing rod and reels both in Saltwater, both penn reels and rod. I put down on my seat to help my dad unhook a blue fish. My dad said you should put that pole in a rod holder and just as he said it Bam a blue fish hit it and the whole rig went over. Second time, I was in a 14 foot aluminum fishing for fluke. I had my chesapeake bay retriever in the boat and she decided to go for a swim. I put my pole down (another penn reel and can't remember the rod), to pull her into the boat and Bam it goes over the side. The next day I spoke to the Marina owner and he said two guys came in with a big fluke that had a rod and reel (penn) attached to it. What the heck.

I pulled up a popping cork I saw floating last week and it had a GLoomis greenwater rod and shimano reel on the end of it. The rig was spotless, no sand in the reel and only about 4' of brand new power pro from cork to rod. I'm thinking it fell out of a boat and didn't get pulled in since so little line was out. Yoo Hoo. I asked a few guys in the fishing club I know use that same rod and it didn't belong to any of them.

A bunch of years ago behind the stink house I found a rod and penn reel in a sand bar at low tide. The rod had mussles growing on the eyes. I tried the reel and it still worked!! Went home, cleaned it up and am still using that reel today.

I went fishing today and would you believe I lost my girlfriend (The Sea Hag) overboard. If anyone finds her, I wish they would return her... back into the ocean. For the record, I do not know how the anchor got tangled around her neck, but I don't need that anymore either. Picked up replacements on the way home!

I was fishing with John on the Chumstain a number of years ago. I think we were togging. One of the guys who was out there (I think a barner) was so excited about this custom rod that I think he himself had just finished building. He made a real bid deal out of this rod.

So about halfway through the day, he went to set the hook on one of these buggers while he had slimy hands and it just popped out and went into the drink. This guy was pissed, just sulking and bitching for quite a while, not that I blame him.

Meanwhile John is on the bow trying some different parts of the wreck. I see him call Scottie up the the front. I have no idea what they are doing but they are up to something.

After a little while, John comes back to the stern and then goes into the salon. To everyone's shock, he walks out with this guy's rod. He had caught in on the bow, had scottie open a forward hatch, and put it inside. Unreal.

A charter Captain I fish with lost a rod overboard a few years ago while wreck fishing. About a week later he shows up at the boat and there is the lost rod in the cockpit of his boat. Someone alse hooked the rod while on the same wreck and reconized Capt. Dan's nickname (Danny Boy) on the custom built rod.

Great story and a better ending. I applaud you for your efforts.

While fishing a pier this summer a family with small boys show up with thier new rods and low and behold a little guy about 5 years old comes over to the rail and gives it his all hail mary cast! Unfortunately he forgot the part about holding on to the rod. Well this little guy was devistaded. I lucily had my rigged up snag rod sitting there and I actually snagged his outfit on the first cast. Result- one happy 5 year old !!!

It doesn't involve a rod, but certainly fits the category of strange. In late June/early July about 20 years ago in a rental boat out of Dad's place in North Wildwood, we pulled over and anchored up off the channel. I figured we'd drop crab traps, while fishing. Since rentals only have one anchor, everytime a boat went by, the wake would push the boat accordingly. So, in order to not have the star traps pulled up each time, I made sure there was plenty of slack in the line.

When I went to check one of the traps, the line was under the boat, so I just figured the boat had moved from the passing wake. I pull the line, and it feels like the trap is 25 pounds. Then it starts to pull the other way. After about 30 seconds, I got the trap out from under the boat and then it took off away from the boat toward the channel. I wrestled with the trap for a bit and finally got it to the surface and then Swooooshhhh. Jumping out of the water was a 3 1/2 foot sand shark with one hook from a brand new double hook rig in its mouth, and the other hook attached to my trap. Apparently this hungry creature snapped off somebody's line earlier that day, and went for the bunker in my trap. Scared the crap out of me went it cleared the boat.
