Fished aboard my "Bertha" with Byte Me, Mike P. and Al on Sunday, 11/9.

Started out trying to jig under minimal birdplay just at the end of the Sandy Hook Channel. Mike landed one short bass along with a bluefish while I was "munched off" by a couple of bluefish. Despite relatively good marks, we just couldn't get the fish to bite.

After the birdplay dropped out completely, we headed to the reef to try some bottom fishing. Unfortunately, my crab supply was low, and the clams were only attracting ravenous bergalls. :( Ended at the reef with only a few toy togs for Johhny and I along with a medium-sized keeper for Mike that he released. I also managed to box two keeper porgies on my top clam baits.

After using the few crabs we had and losing the wreck anchor that I had for the last 5 years :(, we picked up and decided to head North looking for bass.

Trolled up a handful of 9-12 lbs. blues on a pair of stretch plugs from the reef to the highlands bridge. Around the highlands bridge, Mike caught a huge 12+ lbs. bluefish that I left the wheel to help land. Unfortunately, while I was away from the wheel Johhnny allowed the boat to blow back over the other plug line. The prop immediately wrapped up 100+ yds. of braid before he could shut her down. Fortunately, I was able to unwrap all the braid without any of it getting into the lower unit seals. After that fiasco, I had enough of the trolling, so we pulled the trolling gear and decided to go on the hunt for birds.

Ran through some brutally rough conditions till we finally spottted some birds just off the shoreline of Rockaway Beach. Once we got on the birds/fish, we had a brief flurry of action before some inconsiderate trollers joined us and started putting down the fish by running through the middle of them every time they would assemble.

Fortunately, we were able to catch a few fish from each school before the trolling idiots in the area would ruin the action. :huh:We were nailing both blues and bass from under the birds. Mike even managed to catch and release a bird from among the melee.

As the day got later, the majority of the fish switched from blues to bass, and we had really good shots at the bass as the sun was setting all the way from Rockaway to Romer Shoal.

Ended the day with 17 bass total and other 2 dozen blues. I had 9 bass, Johnny and Al each had 3 while Mike had 2. other than the blues we trolled, all of our fish came on AVA 47's and spoons.

Brutal winds and bright clear skies, but we still managed to put a decent catch together.

I came around the hook yesterday around noon, and man was it snotty.

nw wind and a incoming tide makes that bay dangerous

did it die out later in the day?

NOT AT ALL :naughty: ... we were the only center console out in our area, and my curtains definitely got a good rinsing. ;)

Coming back across from NY back to the hook was like a cross between a carwash, a flume ride and a motocross track.

Glad to see you got out! I took the ride with JR down to Cape May on Sunday his Cat cuts the rough water like a knife he's doing tog trips down there. I'll call you this week I'm having the boat pulled this week if it's nice I want to winterize it and get it done.

I'm hopin' to keep "Bertha" in for a little while longer ... hoping for the 2nd or 3rd week of Dec. if the weather stays decent.

As you know, you are always welcome to jump on board with me ... Don't be afraid to call and ask if you are itching to get out once the April Ann starts her Winter nap.

It was definitely "sporty" out there. However, we were nice and comfy hanging out in Bertha's "greenhouse."

Can you believe Al was out there again on Monday in the same type of conditions aboard his Mako cc with no T-top enclosure?

Hammer said he saw them jigging and they looked like they were getting soaked every time they had to move the boat. He said it was like 3 little kids hiding behind their mother's skirt as all 3 aboard were trying to huddle/hide behind what little bit of protection the console could offer.

It's one thing to get spray hitting you in July/August, but November is not the month to be getting wet. :naughty: They did manage to jig a few bass though!

P.S. Did Johnny share any of the details of or trip to the Claddagh in Highlands for beers and dinner after fishing on Sunday? If not, I have some funny stuff to share with you when I see you: For now, I'll just say that it was singles night.:D

P.S.S. Was out for pheasants with Lucy this morning, and she did pretty good. I passed an easy hen on the ground that would not fly. (Damn thing was standing ahead of me in the middle of the path. When I put Lucy on its ass ... it just ran and ran and ran till we had enough. My buddy also cleanly missed another hen that gave him an easy going away that Lucy flushed right in front of his face.

The best part was that we saw a rooster fly by that someone else flushed into a hedgerow right in front of us. Rather jump it and kill it, we guided the first group of hunters to where it landed, and they managed to put him in the bag. These guys were so appreciative ... they told us they had never seen anyone actually act sportsmanlike in the field on a NJ WMA before.

My last trip for Pheasants was topped off with the stocking truck showing up.
It was a good day, I only had Mackey and Wyatt hunting for me because Stephen limited out the day before with Lady, and she was a bit torn up.
It is nice having a fleet of pointers. :D

I missed out hunting over Lady my last two trips out because Stephen keeps taking her a day before I am able to get out. He is hogging my best dog.... smart kid ! :)
