Have you guys heard this? Avet has dropped there prices on the SX and MX for a short time, till 12/31/08. The SX has been reduced to $169.00 and the MX to $189.00. Not sure about the other models.
That's crazy, good, but crazy. They just increased there prices a little while ago. Its on all the tackle websites. I even asked Ron at FS about it, and he said yes. He should be getting in a decent supply.
These are great reels, I have several SX's and a couple MX's.
It kind of sucks, I went around like crazy, just a month ago looking for a orange SX, and was happy to find one for $199.00 @ Tackle Direct.
At these prices I'll just have to pick up another one, I just have too.:D
"NOW" I just heard, that VS is going up in price 10% as of the new year. :naughty: So if your thinking about one, think quicker. I have been thinking about a VS150.
Not sure which is the better sales pitch: Lower the prices so everybody picks one up, or say your going to raise your prices so everyone hurry's out to get one. Either way, they are both rolling in the dough.:please:
Tight Line, Mike

I hear these are really nice reels. Which would be a good choice for inshore fishing for stripers, blues etc.?

For stripers and blues you dont need anything bigger than the SX. If you plan to use it for trolling load it will braid. The MXL or MXJ are nice also but overkill in my opinion. I have taken bass up to about 30lbs on the SX and it was no trouble. I have also seen tuna in up to about 40lbs taken with no trouble on the SX...
They are great reels. Keep them clean and squirt the screws with oil every other trip (or remove, grease them and reinstall) and they will last years.

Stopped in at Fisherman's Headquarters tonight, and yes, they are on sale for $169. I have never used one before, but based on their reputation and the fact that I am upgraded some gear this year, I bought two SXs.
Will be trying them out in about 9 hours..................

Can you use one of these avet models for tuna.....
Yes. The SX will handle football tuna's but I would go with the MX for larger tuna. There is a Tuna engraved on each reel!

take one,
The reels are lettered for there sizes. They also come in one and two speeds.
The SX is the smallest of the reels.
Then there is the JX, a narrow reel. Good for jigging.
The MX is next and has more line capacity and so on. Can be used for Tuna and trolling.
I'm not an expert, but I have about 5 of the SX models (great reels), that I use for fluking, bass, blues, black fish and weakies. I also have a pair of the MX models, I tend to use them in the spring for bigger bass and blues or trolling.
Hope this helps a little, Mike

Hey Russ,
They did lower the price of the MC SX. It was $269 now $239. This reel can be cast from the beach or boat with no birds nest and no thumb. With the new cast control knob on the side.
I'll be picking one of theses up from my favorite B&T shop! In black of course. Ron you better not sell my reel.:fighting:
Check it out on this You Tube clip.

Here I borrowed a price list from a website.
SX 240/20#, 300/15# $199.99 $169.99
SX Magnetic Cast 240/20#, 300/15# $269.99 $239.99
MXJ 300/20#, 350/25# $209.99 $179.99
MXL 350/20#, 300/25# $219.99 $189.99
Guys, this is a great price for a tank of a reel. Now just imagine picking one up for a $5 raffle ticket. Its a no brainer, order some raffle tickets from Russ.
Not only is it worth a try, but its a great cause, helping little Jacob. Imagine helping someone in need on thanksgiving.
That's what its all about guys.
Lami
PS: Russ I'll take 4 more tickets, please send me your address again.

I just bought two SXs. One for my brother and one for me. My brother had it spooled with 50lb braided (over kill I was thinking) but when he had it spooled they suggested no backing??? Is this okay to do? I was always under the impression there should be some backing? Thought on this?

You can get away with no backing if they put some kind of tape on first to provide a grip for the braid, but I still prefer a base of mono, a PERFECT uni-uni knot, and then the braid, for which 50lb works fine.

A rubberband will work as well ;)

if you are gonna tuna fish you will want alot more than an MX. I'd get a LX for trolling for yellowfin and one of the EX for chunking bluefin

Hey Joe,
I always use backing on mine also with the uni to uni knott. A buddy went with the tape and during the heat of the summer, it made a reel mess. :D Found this out when he went to rotate the PP @ the end of the season.
I have 50lb pp on the MX's and 30lb pp on the SX models. You can't go wrong either way. I like the 50lb because its easier to tie knotts with. The eyes are the first to go. :please: LOL
