Does anyone have a good story on a big fish caught from a yak?
I landed an few that pulled me around but none where I had to land the kayak first to get the fish.

How about the kid who caught a big striper out front last year I think.
Instead of netting it he stuck is arm in the mouth and out the gill and hauled her to the beach.

I sold a Hobie Navigator to a guy this summer who had just come up from Florida. He was fishing out of Tampa in a power boat with some freinds when they saw a kayak 7 miles from shore. They went over to investigate and found a guy almost passed out with a 300 lb Bull shark across his lap. The story was that he had spent the last 4 hours fighting the shark finaly grtting a gaff in it and then stabbing it repeatedly.
The guys asked if he wanted a tow in and he declined having confidence that his Hobie would get him and his fish back to shore. But before they took off he waved them over and asked if they would bring his fish in to the marina for him. They did and he finaly showed up to claim his prize. The guy in the power boat decided to get himself a Hobie after seeing what this guy in Florida was capable of.

24" Bass:D That is my best so far. Maybe I'll have a better story next year for the kayak. I did not even get on it this year. I was about 2 miles out in the big D. On a perfect day. I would not do that again. The bay was flat but it took me 45 min. of hard paddeling to get back to the beach.

If it's the story I am thinking about where he got some air time on TV that was about five years ago and the fish was over 50 pounds and was on a surf board to boot:fighting: Ashame the kid got wrapped up in the wrong crowd and is learning some hard lessons in life right now...

I pulled a bunch of 36+inch stripers out of the ocean this past spring in front of seaside they were a blast as for the draging me and my yak behind them not so much I have an 06 outback so between the yak and me that's 300lbs
P.s. I only kept the 2 shorter ones I let the bigger ones swim free

I think hes talking about the kid from LBI. He went out on an Emotion charger which is a tiny little kayak. He was planning on catching bunker on a 10lb test outfit so his dad and him could use them later for bait. On of the bunker he snagged got nailed by a 53lb bass and he landed it it. Not being able to pull the bass into the yak he jumped in the water and swam the bass and the yak the 100 yards to shore. His dad was all over it. By morning he had been sponsored by a couple companys and apeared on the big three news shows with the sponsors logos being displayed in the background. It was his 15 minutes. If life has gone downhill for him since then its a shame.

Biggest striper I caught from my yak was about 26". But the biggest fish I ever hooked into was a HUGE cownosed ray. I was trolling a lit bridge at night when I hooked into what I was hoping to be a big striper. It pulled me around for about 15 minutes and 1/4 mile away from the bridge till I finally saw the two wingtips break water. I cut the line and paddled back to the bridge. It was my first sleigh ride.

largest fish on my yak is 29" bass, a few 28s and lots of not quites. The fish cauht in shallow water were more fun then the deep water fish. The deep fish just keep going back down but the shallow fish will pull you around a little even if he is a shorty. Lots of fun best fishing toy I ever bought. Can't wait till the spring run.

Saltwater - 2 years ago I caught a Brown Shark almost 4 feet long in Townsend Inlet. Got him along side the yak but removed the hook and set him free as there was no reason to yank him in the yak with me.
Freshwater - I caught a 42 lbs. carp last summer in Cayuga Lake in NY. Thing pulled for a long time. Found out that Hobie pedals are stronger than the pull of a carp:D
Interesting - I told this strory before but here is the link in case you missed it:

I've fished those flats the last several years for shad and have been spooled several times. I would love to take my yak out for the spring run. Where do you launch from. Under the dam or farther down by Deer Creek? I usually start fishing down there at the end of april.

when would you be going down?
btw, my biggest in the yak is only a schoolie striper to date, but this year I didn't get out...long story but the short of it was not having a transport vehicle.... so the yak sat.

Usualy a few guys from the barn will make regular trips down there throughout April. Its not far from S jersey. We camp in the camground or some guys rent houses. There will be a bunch of posts in late March.

My best from a Yak was bout a 110 lb mako.. biggest was a bat ray about 140 or so, not that I can eyeball them the way I used to.. lol.. biggest regular fish was bout 34 lbs, a white seabass taken off of cardiff.. what I want to do is paddle back out to the 9 mile bank early next september and try for a couple YFT or dorado/albies .. from a shore launch.. lmao.. we'll see if I can pull it off,

My biggest was a 37" striper caught on 10# test while bouncing minnows for flounder in Corson's inlet in mid-summer. Landed her in front of a crowd of spectators since boats kept coming up to me to ask if I needed help. That was fun!

yah, paddled to the 9 mile once when the yellows and smaller tuna came in.. but then all three of the kelp paddies I found had been hit so hard I couldn't seem to get a raise out of the pitiful 'necktie' dodo's I found under em.. ah well, mebbe next season.. that mako was a trip.. he was flyin and everything.. had to get some help from another yakker that had a gaff a bit longer than mine, then i tailroped and bled him.. paddling back wasn't much fun, but hell, towing 112 lbs of shark back is never a great thing-until you get to shore... lol
