I've always trolled wire using a penn 113hsp however i'm
thinking of changing over to a newell 454 . I'm looking
for some opinions from those of you that have fished both.
Thanks in advance

Haven't fished the Newell but have Shimano Tekota 800's and everyone that is skeptical and considering new reels other than the 113's that has fished them on my boat has ditched the 113's and bought the Tekota's. They are lighter, come with a one piece frame, crank in more line per crank, have more free spool, and have a heavy duty level wind.

You do have to be a little more careful letting wire out as the markings hang in the level wind sometimes. And you have to rinse the reels off spray them down with a light oil or anti corrosive as they have aluminum spools but I would not trade them for anything.

you have to be careful if it has a graphite spool as it may crack under the stress of the wire line. i fish a newell from the surf on my 10'6" breakaway and i love it. it is a workhorse reel.

Jersey Joe...Right there with you I have the same set ups...I have the 113s and just recently bought two new wire set ups using the tekota 800s...They are incredible. Alot more user friendly and hold up great. Try them !!!! Highly suggest it.

Would the Torium work? You would think so if the Tkodas do, and they dont have the level wind. Just slightly higher in cost.
To answer the original question, you can beat on a 113HSP with a hammer all day and you cant kill it. The Bad news is that I hear the next wave of these reles are being made in China. AS far as the Newell, I dont think it will hold up to the wear and tear. See if anyone has gotten two seasons out of them. Kevin Bogan

Bought two Newells for my bunker spoon rods about three years ago. Used them two or three times and had one fail. Sent it back to factory and got an argument from the people that handle returns. After a month or so, I got the reel back in new condition and a personal apology from the owner.

This year was the first season I used the reels since the factory repair. On the second trip the same reel failed again. Locked up, assume teeth are broken on at least one of the gears inside. Instead of letting it ruin another striped bass season I opted to purchase two Shimano Tekota 8000 mentioned above. Could not be happier, the newbies love the levelwind as well. I guess I will send both Newells back again to the factory. Trying to be optimistic here, but I suspect I may only use the Newells as backups in the future.

As far as the Penns 113HSP go, I own five of them. Every one of them has been rebuilt numerous times by me and the factory over the last eleven years (some are about six years old). All of them need alot of attention and I got tired of the annual rebuild. Clickers fail, drags wear out, pinion gear goes bad, screws are nearly impossible to remove if saltwater gets in. The good news is they are not expensive to rebiuild, just takes some time. Parts are readily available locally. You could say I do not baby my tackle, it gets rinsed after every trip and dried off only if time permits. Drags are left loose when stored for the winter. All of these reels have only seen monel wire over the years (with dacron backing). I guess we troll about fourty hours a year with these reels if that helps.

If money is tight, go with the Penn HSP. If you can swing it go with the Shimano Tekota 8000. As far as the Newells go, its the bottom of the ninth inning and there are two outs and the count is no balls and two strikes. I will give them one more chance, but I am suspect to say the least.

I tried a diawa 400hw last year on a new seeker bunker spoon rod. Like the penn 4/0 It is made for wire line trolling. Its heavy duty. about $10-$20 more than the Penn. It worked out good for me.
