I keep kicking around the idea if trailering my boat (17'9" Grady CC) to VA for a long wknd. I was looking online at the Kiptoteke State Park and its ramp. Anybody ever head down there with their boat? I know some of the Yakers head down there. Any pointers on what I may need to know would be great.

We headed out of Kiptoteke this morning. We eeled the CCBT pilings (without a bite) and ended the day with one fish (48"). It's definitely worth the trip down. Kiptoteke generally works on the honor system this time of year (particularly during the week). Most folks down here are fishing eel balls (eels on balls anywhere from 10 to 30 feet down). Hope this helps.

Old Hat just spent the weekend there
Jigging the pilings was just ok(for CBBT Standards)

Eeling the tubes got the big fish

The ramp at Kiptopeake is nice-3 wide with plenty of staging areas.Make sure you are ready to go cause these boys know what they are doing

Stayed at Kiptopeake inn about 1.5 miles N of Ramp-69 a nite I believe and has fish cleaning table and enough trailer parking

Planning on hitting ramp early(dark) or later(after sunup) or waiting to LAUNCH and same for retrieve. Gets crowded with everyone wanting to get in/out at same time

look up old hat here on barn and send him an email if you have any ?

How long does the bite go on down there? I won't be able to make it untill the 3rd week in Jan. I don't want to winterize my boat yet if I'm gonna head down there but also don't want to go if the bite is long gone in late Jan. Thanks for all the help so far. Mike I will send you a pm when I have my questions all lined up...lol!

During normal winters there will be fish around the bridge until spring. The bay closes to keeping stripers though, so the bridge is C & R only in January. The ocean is still open.
Weather is very important for small boats. That's big water down there. The shoals create huge waves and it gets pretty sporty around the pilings and tunnels/islands with any wind blowing at all.
It can be the most insane fishing you'll ever experience though! Some days you can catch 100+ fish jigging artificials on all that structure, or find birds working over huge schools. Worth the hassle of travel and cold weather.

Leaving in about 4 hours from now with Don C heading to that same spot noted. Should be a fun ride down being it's snowing/sleating up here right now.

what capt. ed said ,be prepared at the ramp make sure everything is in working order really ,really watch the weather,10 to 15 mph. max . it is the most intense striper fishing you will ever have and yes trolling stretch 25s is very productive and so is everything else:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:
