I know the water is still cold, but any striper action?

I doubt it. With all of the snow run off, I would think that the temps are still pretty frigid. Drove over the Route 1 Bridge in Tenton yesterday and the water flow was impressive over the rocks.

No fish in the River until late may. If I were you I wouldnt waste the time to try. Back bay fishing is the place to concentrate on until then

I have to disagree there! I have them up a branch of the rancocas, about 25-30 miles or so from the mouth in early may! We start seeing Stripers on bloods in mid march up here on the burlington banks. Water temps being higher helps, but the bass are there regardless. I meen hell, theyre all about to go make a bunch of babies, you really think they wont be high tailing it to the spawing grounds:D

I am going to agree here, I have seen your pics and read your reports. I am waiting until at least mid april or at least until I hear of activity. I read the SWS article, some decent info there.

Thats not true. Loads of small stripers are there in March, and big females come up by April 1. My biggest river striper is allway caught in the first week of April. By may they are heading for deep water and back out to the ocean.

If you wait till late May to fish you are missing about two months of fast action. One day in late march last year we had a day were we caught 35. No keepers, but nonstop action. We literally couldn't bait our hooks fast enough.

Why do you say "late May"? Are you throwing plugs? The water needs to be warm for that.

The picture I posted was from March... see the plug in the fishes mouth... water temp was around 46-47 on that day and between 4 of us we caught almost 100 stripers.....

I believe CSS is messing with you guys and he got ya

May means Raritan Bay!;)

I get my biggest stripers by the UPS behind the airport on bloodworms. They should have area patroled 24/7 because of all the illegal harvesting done back there. Trust me, I've seen some major atrocities:eek:.

I would be willing to wager my tin boat that there are fish on the DOD flats as we speak . A stone cold lock that the afternoon tide will give up fish .

I am suprised at the early season plug success. I never heard of anyone using plugs this early. Do you guys troll, or drift and cast? I have allways wanted to try it but I am a "don't fix it if it ain't broke" kink of guy. I do really well on bloods so I never tried.

Department Of Defense. It is old Army Corps of Engineers Land that was used for river dredging spoils years ago. Now part of it is a park for the public.

Where is it ? Never river fished for stripers - would like to give it a go - crowded spots are ok - would like to observe others how its done to learn since i'm guessing it would be a bit different from surf fishing- not looking for 'secret honey holes'.
General directions fro Willow Grove PA.

Missingtwo I always thought it stood for Department of Defense. But it really stands for Delaware Ordinace Depot. During the 2nd World War they used to store ordinace in bunkers all over the property. Some of the bunkers are still there but most have been cover with dredge spoils.

Never knew that about the name.

I spent alot of my time back there when you were not allowed back there as a kid with my brother. I have an Uncle who live on RR Ave in Pedricktown so it was close. We killed lots of ducks back there and some deer.

I have never been back there since it became a park.

When I fished had 10 years ago we "might" have cut the locks for the front gates and diven right to the river . Then they started putting 36 pipes in front so some holes "may" have appeared in the fence . Was a fun little game we had going . Then somebody caught the woods on fire and that was that . Shame they really never busted our balls . Like I stated previous its like a mile hike up the beach from the parking . We used to park at old age home and hike .
I miss it sometimes . Sitting on the tailgate on a crisp night by a bonfire and watching the pole bend in half . Biggest I got was 47" . I have had nights where it was 36' fish one after another for over an hour .

Hey md10392,
I'm about to go stir crazy here. Mind sharing how you get to the UPS place? It's not the one in Ridley is it? Sure would be convenient to just run across the street to fish after work.

I don't launch on the top of the Delaware (Bordentown/Trenton) until they start catching at the power plant.

I just started riding past there on the way home from work... :)
