I think a ton of people would agree that a bucktail is #1!

Ad GULP to the 6" curltail grub and it even gets better.

just read the survey it was not the best striper lure, but general statement for all fishing lures produced, if thats the case I think you could make a case for Dare Devil lures.

I think the reason is that a curly tail will catch all species all the time. Cast one into a pond or lake, BAM! Drift one in the back bay or cast it in the surf, BINGO!

if had to pick 1 lure it would be a white bucktail

If I knew how to fish one (bucktail), I might side with you guys. For me though, it's this:

Berkley Gulp 7" Turtle Worm (in cherryseed color). This little baby outperformed all other baits I've tried in freshwater for LMB, so one day last fall I decided to Carolina rig one of these in the back bay right off a deeeeeep dropoff for stripers near some rocks when the water was calm. Let it flutter down to the bottom and most of the time it only made it down about 2/3's of the way before it got devoured!

Choosing a best "alltime" lure is only as good as the time the lure has been around. Since the bucktail has been around forever it seems, it's clear why this would be the majority choice. Mine is based on a newer variation of a worm, but rubber has always outfished for me when not using clam.

I can't say that a naked bucktail would be my first choice, if I had a white bucktail and some grubs I would be a happy man.

soft baits, twisters, grubs are all newer innovations of the bucktails and darts used previously. You can catch any game fish with them from freshwater panfish to saltwater gamefish. I still own bucktails and use them but I keep several bags of softbaits on board to, the same ones that catch LMB will catch Stripers.:)
Used to crappy fish with shad darts then switched to mister twisters back in the mid seventies.

I think the curly tail grub is the all time best lure for fish in general, but not for Stripers. If someone put a gun to my head and told me to catch a a fish or die, and I had to use lures, a curly tail grub would probally be what I would use

I would say more stripers are taken on Clam,... than anything else, but, as far as lures you can t beat a Bucktail and curly tail..If I could have only one lure it would be a 5oz Bucktail and 6" curlytail White, Red white, or Yellow

I don't think there is a best, only what you are confident with. Me I love buck tails & big Sluggos, They worked best for me last year and after a few fish it's hard to tie something else on. I love spooks but not as successful for me.
