Looking for opinions on when you think trolling bunker spoons in front of the beaches will start to be productive. Any thoughts?

I will be hitting it when that water gets to around 55 or we start getting reports in. i would say in the next 3 weeks it should be steady until around mid June.

Last year I think it started first week in May. We would fish the bunker pods and when they would break up we would head deeper and did VERY well with the spooons

Trolled bunker spoons out front of Avalon on various lumps and off beach -47 to 48 degree water but landed 3 and kept one that was about 32"- it had a 10" bunker whole in stomach- even though water is cool for mid-April, they are there but slow trolling with wire on the bottom is what worked for me today-

Thanx for the report Devil but they wont be off IBSP for a couple weeks yet, I troll this area every year and havent cought an ocean striper before may, i'm sure someone on the barn has but for me i wait till may before i dip my spoon in the soup. Im gonna try the Tony Maja spoons for the first time this year, as well as a new england umbrella rig that looks pretty neat. The boat will be in on friday so Ill try the barnegat bay for some action untill the ocean heats up.

I was looking to try the maja spoons this spring as well. Anybody have any reccommendations for sizes and colors? What about terminal rigging? I'm spoolled up with 50lb braid. Thanks.

BMOLD,if you are using braid I would tie a swivel from the braid to a 15' 60lb mono leader. If needed use a 6-8oz drail sinker between the braid and the mono to get the spoon down deeper. All size and colors were successful last spring off IBSP,my first trip was May 12th with 6 fish 28-38lbs on the #4 two tone and the #2 solid green in 65' of water.Any questions shoot me an email.

catch em up!
Tony
