Anybody use the PANTHER MARTIN VIVIF UMBRELLA RIGS? I was thinking about using them because each shad is weighted. I'm figuring that the added weight would help keeping the rig down near the bottom.

Just add a trolling weight in front of the umbrella.

I've pulled them. They do get down, but replacing the weighted shad costs too much. Pull it till the blues get a hold of them and replace with unweighted. If you need to get deeper, slow down or use a drail.
Beside that, the hardware is plenty good.

9ers are good, but too expensive.

I Know a guy in MD that sells several different sizes of umbrellas
rigged with 6"-12" paddletail shads with or without parachutes on the tailing bait.

He also sells replacement paddletail shad from 6"-12" for way cheaper than you will find them in most places.

I just got my stuff delivered the other day. I should be set for all year.:D

Shoot me an e-mail if you want more info on it.

Thanks, e-mail sent. It seems as though the 9ers are the most popular.

I agree with simple just add a drail weight with a 5 or 6 foot leader to the umbrella. I troll them very slow most of the time i just put the boat in gear. And in real deep water i have used drails up to 16 oz.:)

same thing, use the drail at 2.5 to 3 knots, it will get you down where you wanna be, also try braided line instead of mono youll find the bottom much faster.

I've never trolled th umbrellas, just mann stretches so I was thinking about giving them a try. My question is the drail will go at the end of the braid at the swivel, correct. Thats the way we do it for bonito with clark spoons.

Yes the drail goes to the end of the braid. I use 50 pound braid to a snap swivel then the drail. Than a plan swivel to a 6' leader 50 or 60 pound. Then another snap swivel to the umbrella rig.

I do the same but use a slightly larger leader of 10 to 12 feet. It's a bit more work getting the rig back on board, but I have had much better results with a longer leader.
