Timmy haven't seen many anglers on the river either boat or surf/cast. However; there have been a few rumblings of some smaller fish but mainly catfish on the regular.

Other than Pennsy's new daily limit of two striped bass from 20 to 26 inches from April 1, 2009 through May 31, 2009 (from the Calhoun St. Bridge to the Pennsylvania state line) the striper season is closed on the Delaware River.

Nope that's wrong also....
read the regs...
If you are a NJ resident and you have a NJ license the Delaware River is Closed to SB fishing From April 1st to June 1st.....
Just as it is CLOSED in the EEZ... a closed season is just that a closed season....
And the Circle hook rule is only for LIVE BAIT that you are using while targeting other species with a hook size 2 (i believe) or bigger..
you can take that as you want to.... but for NJ it is illegal to target these fish in the river..
PA does not have any laws against fishing for them and they do not have circle hooks laws

says---New Jersey still has a closed season (catch & release with required use of non-offset circle hooks of size 2 and larger, while fishing any natural bait) for striped bass during the same time period. Prior to 2009, Pennsylvania also had an April through May closed season.
http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/pdf/2009/dig_delriver.pdf
To protect spawning striped bass, from the Calhoun Street bridge near
Trenton downstream to the Commodore Barry Bridge at Bridgeport,
non-offset circle hooks must be used when using bait with a #2 sized
hook or larger, from April 1 to May 30.

No your wrong it is not a closed season for NJ Anglers. You are allowed to fish for them but it is C&R only. It clearly states that with the use of circle hooks for fishing for them after March 31. Show me where it says they are not allowed to be caught that it is a non-targetable species?
This right off NJ F&G

No it is closed which means that you cannot target them..... Just as the eez is closed,,,,, Do you fish the eez?
I can't find it right now but in past years issues it had the definition of a closed season and that meant that you cannot take or attempt to take!
But the CO's have come to understand that we are out there fishing for them and that as long as we C&R it is ok..
Our freshwater biologist is named Mark (I forget his last name):
He can be reached at 908 236 2118.
Give him a call... He's a nice guy and he will explain it to you....
I HONESTLY WISH THAT THEY WOULD CLOSE THE RIVER COMPLETELY TO FISHING FOR STRIPERS AND MAYBE SOMEDAY THAT WILL BE TRUE!!
until then... see ya out there..... this year has been.................. :D
Especially nice cause noone has been out there but a select few!

It never says closed the EZZ is Federal not State. The State of NJ Division Of Fish and Game Clearly States you can fish for them but you have to use circle hooks...its right there quoted for you.
I have talked to more than a few FNG officers while catching them and they all have told me circle hooks and C&R the fish.

What don't you understand? Sure, the regs are vague, but closed means CLOSED. It just that the law is not enforced. NJ CO's don't have the manpower or time to enforce a body of water the size of the Big D. As long as you C&R they'll continue to turn a blind eye.

This change is based on a State of Delaware study that determined a harvestable number of the above sized male striped bass are in the river during April and May. New Jersey still has a closed season (catch & release with required use of non-offset circle hooks of size 2 and larger, while fishing any natural bait) for striped bass during the same time period. Prior to 2009, Pennsylvania also had an April through May closed season.
You should read the paragraph right there copied from NJ F&G. 2nd sentence. Yes a closed season but C&R is still allowed with natural bait.

...and a closed season means you can't KEEP them- unless the law specifically says you cant target them.:)

here is an idea.....ask some of the professional guides who make a living fishing the river, ask them if you "cant" target striped bass from 4/1-5/31 on the river, I think some of these guys might know the regs for both sides. Just a thought.

04-16-2009, 08:54 AM
Ask any game official PA or NJ- they will both tell you there is no way to enforce a "targeting" law because an angler could claim they are fishing for another specie. This is why the circle hook regulation is in effect. While fishing for another specie, you could accidentally catch a striper. Furthermore, "take or attempt to take" means just what it says. TAKE as in harvest or keep. Fishing is NOT an attempt to take.

Its been discussed many times...there is a closed harvest peroid, all that is a moot point now that PA enacted the 2 fish between 20 & 26 " limit....so if you cant target them why can those fish that fall in the slot be kept.

See what happens when it rains a few days. Why is everyone so worked up about this. It's really very simple. If you live in PA you can keep two a day in the slot range. If you live in Jersey you cant keep any. End of story. If you want to educate people about the rules become Wardens. I thought this site was supposed to be about. POSTING REPORTS. Some people seem to think that they and a select few that they deem worthy are the only people who should be able to catch. They never post reports. They only come on here to argue or use it as their own bragging board. Now I'm going fishing. I will post my report later.
